
TEXTING AND DRIVING – Luxembourg police issued an average of 16 fines per day to motorists using mobile phones in the past 12 months. A total of 5,737 fines were handed down for using a phone while driving between 1 April 2025 and 22 March 2026. According to the police, about one in ten accidents is caused by using a phone at the wheel.
COLLECTIVE AGREEMENTS – A new collective agreement has been signed at Munhowen. Between 220 and 230 employees at the company will benefit from two pay increases, bonuses, and additional leave days under a new collective agreement signed on 3 April. The Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) and the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) made the announcement.
WITNESS APPEALS – Police in Trier are warning the public about a 25-year-old man who shot and injured an officer in Prüm on Tuesday afternoon before escaping into a nearby forest. Authorities have urged the public not to approach the man under any circumstances, not to pick up any hitchhikers, and to contact the police immediately if they spot him.
Betzdorf municipality is seeking witnesses after a break-in at a local school. Unknown individuals gained access to the primary school in Roodt-sur-Syre over the Easter weekend, causing significant material damage and prompting the municipality of Betzdorf to launch a witness appeal on social media.
IRAN-US CEASEFIRE – US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran on the condition that it re-opens the Strait of Hormuz. The deal was brokered overnight ahead of a deadline imposed on Iran. The breakthrough comes following inflammatory remarks made by Trump yesterday to lay waste to the “whole civilisation” if a deal was not reached.
Oil prices plunged today while stocks rallied after the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire that will see Tehran temporarily reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. The news pushed down crude prices, with West Texas Intermediate losing almost 20 percent and Brent as much as 16 percent as investors heaved a huge sigh of relief after more than five weeks of war that has hammered supplies.
ESPIONAGE THREATS –Two French nationals are headed home from war-stricken Iran after spending more than three years in an Iranian prison on espionage charges, authorities said. Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris are due back in France today. The couple had been under house arrest at the French embassy in Tehran since they were freed in November.
MISSILE TESTS – North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea’s military said, hours after reporting an “unidentified projectile” launched from the North’s capital area the previous day. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has sought to repair ties with North Korea since taking office last year, criticising his predecessor for allegedly sending drones to scatter propaganda over Pyongyang.
FOOTBALL Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany hailed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after his team secured a 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first leg win at Real Madrid yesterday. Luis Diaz and Harry Kane’s goals gave the Bundesliga leaders a strong lead on a dominant display but Kylian Mbappe pulled one back for Madrid, with Neuer making a string of impressive saves to keep the record 15-time winners at bay. The veteran stopper thwarted the competition’s top goalscorer Mbappe on several occasions and was named man of the match.
David Raya was hailed as the world’s best goalkeeper by Arsenal’s Kai Havertz after the pair inspired Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. Raya made a trio of vital saves to keep spluttering Arsenal in the game at the Jose Alvalade Stadium. The Spaniard tipped Maxi Araujo’s drive onto the crossbar and kept out Geny Catamo’s low effort before making another fine stop to parry Catamo’s header late in the second half.
HORSE RACING Legendary mare Winx’s first surviving foal, that sold for a record Aus$10 million (US$7 million), has been retired on veterinary advice without running a race. Quinceanera set a new global mark for a thoroughbred yearling when Australian Debbie Kepitis’s Woppitt Bloodstock fended off interest from America, Japan and Europe to buy her in 2024. Sired by leading stallion Pierro, there were high hopes for the filly. But the three-year-old will now become a broodmare - one kept specifically for breeding purposes.
