
YELLOW ALERT - There is a yellow alert in place for the north of the country. Motorists are advised to be careful when driving today, as reports of sleet and snow are coming in from the following areas: Colmar-Berg, Angeldorf and Ettelbruck and icy conditions around Clervaux. The Moselle region has also announced freezing rain. Meteolux have put out a yellow alert for the north of the country, warning of snowfall around midnight.
NATIONAL ALERT - Today is another test of the national alert system. A text message will be sent during the day, this time to people living in the centre of the country. At midday, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding will draw a first balance of these tests at a press conference.
LAOS VISIT - Grand Duke Henri and the Minister of Development Franz Fayot are on an official visit to Laos from today until Thursday. The visit is part of the 25th anniversary of the bilateral relationship between both countries. Delegation officials are scheduled to sign two protocols with their hosts and two further trilateral protocols with Switzerland.
OIL EMBARGO - A European Union embargo on Russian crude oil exports by sea is coming into force today. So too is a $60 dollar-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil, in an attempt to deny the Kremlin of war resources. The deal was agreed on Friday by the EU, the G7 group of wealthier nations and Australia.
TERROR TRIAL - Evidential hearings in the Brussels terror trial begin today. 9 people have been charged, including the French Islamist Salah Abdeslam, who has already been sentenced to a life sentence in France for the Paris attacks. The trial will last at least until June. 32 people died in the bombings in March 2016, which targeted Zaventem airport in Brusssels as well as the metro.
PELE HOSPITAL - The daughters of Brazilian football superstar, Pele, have told his fans that their father’s health is not at serious risk, saying they are confident he will return home when he recovers from a respiratory infection. The 82-year-old has been hospitalized in Sao Paulo since Tuesday amid ongoing treatments for colon cancer, which was first diagnosed in September 2021.
WORLD CUP - At the World Cup in Qatar, England is in the quarter-finals, after a 3-0 win against Senegal. The English will play against France on Saturday. Today Japan will play Croatia and South Korea will be up against Brazil.
SKIING SUPER-G - Olympic downhill gold medallist Corinne Suter won the World Cup super-G at Lake Louise on Sunday. The Swiss skier, Suter clocked 1min 20.75sec. And Aleksander Aamodt Kilde won the men’s super-G at Beaver Creek, beating Swiss rival Marco Odermatt by two-tenths of a second.
CYCLO CROSS - At the Cyclo-Cross World Cup in Antwerp, Marie Schreiber finished 9th yesterday. The 19-year-old Luxembourger was more than 3 minutes behind the Dutch Fem Van Empel. In the men’s category, the Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel came in first, ahead of Wout Van Aert.
