Shortly after 3am on Saturday, Saarland police were alerted to a wrong-way driver on the A8 near Perl, heading toward Luxembourg. The vehicle, bearing Belgian license plates, was travelling on the wrong side of the motorway from at least the Perl exit toward Merzig.

Traffic on the A8 toward Luxembourg was slowed by police from Merzig to protect other drivers. Officers drove towards the driver between the Weiler rest area and the Schwemlinger exit.

Despite flashing blue lights and clear stop signs, the driver passed the first police car, and only a second police vehicle was able to stop him.

The driver was identified as a 75-year-old man from Aachen who appeared to be confused. Initial investigations suggest that cardiac issues may have partially contributed to the incident. The driver was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Further investigations have been launched, and the Saarbrücken Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered his driving license to be revoked.

Anyone who witnessed the wrong-way driver is asked to contact the Merzig police station by calling +49 6861 7040.
