Discussions around the issue are beginning to grow in France.
Initially proposed by the citizen’s convention for climate, the speed limitation could soon become the subject of a referendum, Secretary of State for Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari suggested on Monday.
“These limitations are beneficial to the environment and to the safety of drivers. It would be a great moment for a democratic society, but the final decision to vote on the matter remains with the president”, Djebbari noted.
The 150 members of the citizen’s convention have received an invitation to discuss the issue with the president on 29 June.
Since the disruptions of the yellow vests protests, a democratic referendum is being considered to help create a consensus between parties.
President Emmanuel Macron indicated that he was willing to organise a referendum on multiple connected issues in cooperation with the convention.
Among those is a speed limitation on French motorways of 110 km/h, currently set at 130 km/h, much to the disapproval of driver’s associations, who are still opposing the 89 km/h limitation on country roads.
When asked about his personal opinion on the matter, Secretary of State for Transport Djebbari declined to comment.
