
WEATHER ALERT – A Meteolux yellow weather alert is in place for the whole country this morning as several centimetres of snow are expected throughout the course of the morning, along with cold temperatures which may not rise above zero for the remainder of the day. Drivers are asked to be extra vigilant given the circumstances.
BURGLARIES – On Saturday morning, a burglar was arrested in Luxembourg City. It has been confirmed by the police that the individual was arrested after a break-in attempt into an office building in Limpertsberg. He succeeded in forcibly entering through a door before being apprehended by a patrol dispatched to the scene.
And a burglary occurred between 3 pm and 7.40pm on the same day in Junglinster, on the Route de Luxembourg. According to police reports, the suspect or suspects forcibly entered the house by breaking through the basement door. Forensic police have been dispatched to the scene and an investigation has been initiated.
TRAIN STRIKES – A disruption is anticipated on the Metz-Luxembourg City line on Monday morning as a local strike is set to result in the cancellation of at least six trains. Affected are the trains departing from Metz at 6.03am, 6.07am, and 7.33am. Additionally, several Thionville-Luxembourg City connections will be impacted. Trains originating from Metz will only operate as far as Thionville station, affecting departures at 6.14am, 7.06am, and 8.06am. In total, six connections are slated for cancellation on Monday morning. As per the SNCF traffic plan released on Sunday, return journeys are expected to proceed without disruption.
ISRAEL/GAZA CONFLICT – The Israel-Hamas war reached a grim milestone of 100 days on Sunday, with more civilian deaths in Gaza, and relatives of dozens of hostages still awaiting their freedom. The Hamas government media office stated on Sunday that “more than 100 people were martyred in the recent attacks in all areas of the Gaza Strip”. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces killed five Palestinians including two shot dead when their car broke through a checkpoint, sources on both sides have said.
RISE OF THE RICH– The world’s wealthiest five men have more than doubled their fortune since 2020, the charity Oxfam said on Monday, as it called on nations to resist the ultra-rich’s influence over tax policy. A report from the charity, published as the global elite gather at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, said their wealth rose from $405 billion in 2020 to $869 billion last year. Adding that – in comparison – since 2020, nearly five billion people worldwide have grown poorer.
AI IMPACT- AI will affect 60 percent of jobs in advanced economies, the International Monetary Fund’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, said in an interview in Washington. With AI expected to have less effect in developing countries, around “40 percent of jobs globally are likely to be impacted,” she said, citing a new IMF report. However, the report – published on Sunday evening – notes that only half of the jobs impacted by AI will be negatively affected; the rest may actually benefit from enhanced productivity gains.
CLIMATE TRAGEDY – Torrential rains that turned avenues into rivers killed at least eleven people in Rio de Janeiro, the fire department told AFP on Sunday. The rainstorm hit northern parts of Rio particularly hard, where people died in a landslide, drownings, and electrocutions. As of Sunday evening Firefighters were still searching for a woman who went missing after her car fell into a river. Mayor Eduardo Paes decreed the situation an “emergency” and urged people to stay home for their own safety, and so as not to disrupt rescue efforts.
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE – Sunday’s games saw Everton draw 0-0 against high-fliers Aston Villa. With Manchester United playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Tottenham at Old Trafford.
SPANISH SAUDI SPECTACLE– In the Spanish Super Cup final – played in Saudi Arabia – Real Madrid secured a comfortable 4-1 victory against arch rivals Barcelona to lift the cup. This represents the 13th time they’ve lifted the trophy.
Winter is definitely here to stay, at least for a little while. Sunday already brought us a little bit of snow, but get ready for it to become increasingly intense as the week goes along.
You might see some of it this morning, reaching a couple centimeters high. Take care on the road, as it will likely be very slippery.
Minimum temperature is expected to be around -4°C, and lovers of round things rejoice, as the maximum should be a nice 0°C. In the afternoon, things could get a bit windy.
