US SHOOTING - US media are reporting at least 22 people have been killed in a mass shooting in multiple locations in the town of Lewiston in Maine. Authorities say the shooter is still at large and have asked people to stay at home. At least 50 people are understood to have been injured. CNN and the Wall Street Journal reported that the attacks occurred in at least two different locations, including a bowling alley and a restaurant.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that a ground invasion on the Gaza Strip is coming after criticism from some in the country over its apparent delay. In a televised address, he said troops were preparing to enter the besieged territory but did not give more details. Israel’s bombardments on Gaza continue with aid agencies warning they are struggling for supplies, including fuel.

EU SUMMIT - EU leaders are set to discuss the situation in the Middle East at a summit in Brussels today, with the aim of agreeing on a “humanitarian pause” in the Israel-Hamas war to allow safe deliveries of aid to Gaza. They will also express support for Kyiv, keeping Ukraine a priority on the two-day summit agenda. There is increasing pressure on EU leaders to show unity on the Israel-Palestine issue with countries such as Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic just wanting to carry a final declaration, in which it is clearly stated that Israel continues to have a right to defend itself.

HOMELESS ASYLUM SEEKERS - The non-profit association ‘Passerell’ has sounded the alarm at seeing asylum seekers on the streets just as temperatures are beginning to drop. RTL recently reported on the problems faced by reception facilities, which have been overwhelmed for years. Referring to the decision by the Luxembourg authorities to place men travelling alone on a waiting list, the association said that they have been receiving young asylum seekers who have nowhere to go this week. Most of these individuals are believed to be from Sudan and Eritrea, and some may be minors.

DIESEL PRICE - Motorists relying on diesel can look forward to good news, as the price of a litre of diesel has fallen by 3.6 cents. Effective this Thursday, diesel prices at the pump in Luxembourg are decrease, with a litre now available at a cost of €1.602.

STUDENT FAIR - Luxembourg’s student fair starts on the campus of the university today and tomorrow. About 120 exhibitors are distributed in 4 university buildings, where you can find out everything about life after secondary school. Student representatives as well as associations and possible employers will be on site. In addition, officials from the Ministry of Higher Education are also there to guide through questions, for example about state financial aid. Details are available at studentefoire.lu.

STORE OPENING - The first Uniqlo shop opens its doors in Luxembourg today. It’s a moment eagerly awaited by fans of the Japanese brand. The brand is setting up shop in the Grand-Rue. In a press release, Uniqlo announced that “numerous offers and promotions” will be available to customers until 4 November.

FOOTBALL - Results from Champions League matches last night: Dortmund won 1-0 to Newcastle, PSG beat AC Milan 3-0, Manchester City beat Young Boys Bern 3-1, Porto beat Antwerp 4-1, Barcelona scored 2-1 against Donetsk and Leipzig won 3-1 to Belgrade.

In the Europa League tonight, among others, Liverpool plays against Toulouse. Union St Gilloise, with the Luxembourgish national goalkeeper Anthony Moris are playing Linz.

RUGBY - Argentina play England in the Rugby World Cup’s third-place play off tomorrow with both sides licking their wounds from two very different semi-final losses and having already met during the tournament. Kick off is at 9pm at the Stade de France.

Meanwhile, Aaron Smith will bow out of international rugby after the World Cup final against South Africa on Saturday. The 34-year-old scrum-half has cemented his place in New Zealand rugby folklore, praised across the board for his infectious passion for the game. Smith made his All Blacks debut against Ireland in June 2012, has gone on to win 124 caps and was instrumental in the New Zealand squad that won the 2015 World Cup.

And in Luxembourg, RCL’s Men’s 1st XV is set to face off against Jamaica Rugby UK on Saturday. This event is timed as a prelude to the Rugby World Cup Final, promising a day of rugby entertainment.The day kicks off with the RCL Blues taking on Trier at 1pm.
