PETROL PRICE - Unleaded petrol and diesel will jump back up in price again today. Unleaded petrol will rise to €1.80, while diesel will rise to €1.89 per litre, mere days after its biggest fall in price since March.

FRONTALIERS HOME OFFICE - Luxembourg and France have come to a new agreement, which increases the amount of annual home-office days for cross-border employees to 34. In a written statement, the Ministry of Finance explained that both countries signed the respective tax agreement on Monday.

LUXEMBOURG WAGES - Employees in Luxembourg could see their wages change up to three times in 2023 according to new forecasts from STATEC. The next wage increase was initially scheduled to take place at the end of 2022, however, this was changed in the latest tripartite agreement, signed between the government and its social partners. According to a new forecast, the next index tranche will have to be made in the first quarter of 2023.

US MIDTERMS - Donald Trump has told a republican rally in Ohio that he will be making a very big announcement next week, amid speculation he might be running for President again in 2 years’ time. He and President Biden have been addressing supporters ahead of today’s crucial mid-term elections in the US. A strong showing from the Republicans will make it difficult for President Biden to implement his policies in both chambers of congress.

UKRAINE DEFENCE - Ukraine has announced it has received more air defence systems from Western military allies, as officials in Kyiv said the situation with supplies was “tense” following continued Russian attacks on energy facilities. Attacks by Moscow’s forces have destroyed around 40 percent of Ukraine’s power stations and the government has urged Ukrainians to maximise electricity savings. The war in Ukraine will certainly be a big topic in the Chamber, as Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn is scheduled to make his foreign policy declaration this afternoon.


FRANCE NUCLEAR - French utility EDF discovered a radioactive leak last Wednesday in the primary cooling circuit of its Civaux nuclear plant in southwestern France. According to the company there was no safety risk and no radioactivity was measured outside the plant. The leak could delay the reactor’s planned Jan. 8 restart. The Civaux 1 reactor has been shut since August 2021 for scheduled 10-year maintenance.

BELGIUM STRIKE - A general strike is planned across Belgium tomorrow. Public transport, aviation and many companies will be affected. There are still big differences between employers and the Belgian unions over a an increase in pensions and family allowances. Inflation in Belgium was over 12% in September.

DANCING BASS - Science has confirmed that to light up the dance floor, you need to turn up the bass. Researchers have taken a closer look at the relationship between bass frequencies and dancing, thanks to an experiment conducted during a real-life electronic music concert. The results, published Monday in the journal Current Biology, showed that participants danced almost 12 percent more when researchers introduced a very low frequency bass -- one that dancers could not hear.

WORLD CUP BRAZIL - Brazil coach Tite has named his World Cup squad, seeking a sixth title with a team led by Neymar and 39-year-old veteran Dani Alves. Alves, as the oldest player ever named to a Brazilian World Cup squad, will be participating in his third edition of the tournament. Liverpool player Roberto Firmino, has failed to make the cut for Qatar, losing out to forwards such as Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, Pedro and Tottenham’s Richarlison. The Brazilian attacker Pedro proposed marriage to his long-time girlfriend after hearing he had made Brazil’s team.

WORLD CUP ERKISEN - Staying with the World Cup: Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, is one of 21 players included in Denmark’s World Cup squad, with the coach set to name the remaining five players in the coming days.

FOOTBALL BUNDESLIGA - And in the German Bundesliga, it’s the 14th game day. Tonight, Wolfsburg meets Dortmund, Bayern meets Bremen, Bochum meets Gladbach and Stuttgart meets Hertha.

Weather

Although today’s temperatures will be on the warm side, the second part of the day will see rain showers across Luxembourg. Expect cooler conditions beneath an overcast sky this morning, with a warm afternoon ahead. From late afternoon, however, the chance of rain will increase. Morning temperatures will start off at 6-8°C, rising to highs of up to 17°C in the afternoon.
