Obama’s 2016 regulation decreed that a person’s gender went beyond biological sex, allowing non-binary, transgender and other sexual identities to be included.

The Trump administration has now reversed this policy, “returning to the government’s interpretation of sex discrimination according to the plain meaning of the word ‘sex’ as male or female and as determined by biology”.

Civil right’s organisations now fear that doctors and other healthcare providers may deny care to affected individuals.
