
DP HOUSING - The Democratic Party (DP) has presented its policies on housing in Luxembourg ahead of Sunday’s election. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel proposed to reform all of the competent authorities into one place in order to simplify housing procedures. Currently the Ministry of Housing is responsible for construction, but many procedures need to go through either the Ministries of Home Affairs or the Ministry of the Environment. In the future either the Ministry of Housing would be responsible for all of these procedures or the party would want to create an overarching new ministry.
CALL FOR WITNESSES - Luxembourg City police are looking for a man who used a stolen credit card on multiple occasions this summer. The credit card, which was stolen from a bag on a restaurant terrace was used in restaurants and kiosks. Police have circulated an image of the suspect and are asking that any information that might help to locate the man be sent to the police.
KIRCHBERG KNIFE - And the police were notified of a disturbance in the Kirchberg area, where a man was reportedly seen carrying a sword on Sunday evening. The police found the man next to a tram stop. In one of the legs of his trousers, officers found a ‘Langbajonette’, a large antique knife or bayonet. After a check-up by a doctor the man was put under arrest for the possession of an illegal weapon.
GERMANY REUNIFICATION DAY - It’s a holiday in Germany today, the “Day of German Unity.” President Steinmeier will give a speech in front of 1300 guests at the official ceremony at the Elb-Philharmonie in Hamburg. In the run-up to the ceremony, Steinmeier said that in 33 years of reunification of West and East Germany, much has been achieved. But it is not enough, as there are still inequalities and problems in German society.
UKRAINE EU - After the meeting of EU foreign ministers yesterday in Kyiv, Ukraine is optimistic about the country’s EU accession. In his nightly video message, President Zelensky said it was only a matter of time until Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union. The aim is to start accession negotiations this year. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian and also the Russian military are reporting drone attacks.
NOBEL PRIZE - The nobel prize in physics will be announced in Stockholm today. The prize for medicine went to two researchers for the development of MRNA vaccines against the coronavirus.
ITALY EARTHQUAKE - A 4.0 magnitude earthquake has shaken Italy’s volcanic region of Campi Flegrei, west of Naples, the latest in a series of tremors in recent days. There were no injuries or damage, although it did cause panic among residents who spilled out into the streets.
HANKS AI - Actor Tom Hanks has warned fans about ads featuring imposters generated by artificial intelligence. “Beware,” Hanks said in an Instagram post that evidently showed a copy of an unauthorized digital version of him. The message had received more than 100,000 “likes” since the Academy Award winning actor posted it to his 9.5 million followers on Instagram on Sunday.
FOOTBALL - It’s the second matchday in the Champions League. Among the matches, Naples are playing Real Madrid at 9 o’clock this evening. Other matches include Bayern vs Copenhagen, Inter Milan against Benfica and Union Berlin against Braga.
