Update: Around 7pm on Friday, UK media reported the arrest of a 26 year old British national in connection with Ann Widdecombe's murder. More info will be shared as it becomes available.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on the public to put political differences aside and help police catch the person responsible for the killing of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe.
According to UK media, a murder investigation was launched after Widdecombe, 78, was found with serious injuries at her home on Thursday morning. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Devon and Cornwall Police said officers are searching for a white male suspect in connection with the killing.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Starmer described the news as "shocking", calling Widdecombe "a distinguished politician".
The prime minister declined to speculate on whether the killing was politically motivated but stressed that the safety and security of elected representatives was "of the utmost importance".
He also appealed for anyone with information about the "dangerous" suspect to come forward, and urged the public to assist police in locating him and bringing him into custody.
Throughout her political career, Ann Widdecombe was a Conservative Party MP, Minister of State, a member of the Brexit Party and most recently affiliated with Reform UK. She also served as a Member of the European Parliament.
