
GARE SECURITY - Over 200 residents of the Gare district have formed a WhatsApp group to address growing concerns over local security and homelessness, with plans for a protest march set for 23 September. According to co-founder Laurence Gillen, the initiative was launched because people are fed up with the lack of action. They demand increased police presence in the district and more radical measures against the “desolate” conditions.
WORMELDANGE BRIDGE - From today, traffic will return to the one-way system at the Wormeldange bridge. For the past few weeks, the bridge has been open in both directions. However, from today, the bridge will alternate one-way traffic towards Luxembourg from 6am to 10am, before switching to Germany. During the switch-over, the bridge will be closed for around 10 to 15 minutes to allow the change to take place.
UKRAINE JETS - Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed a “historic” decision by the Netherlands and Denmark to provide American F-16 fighter jets. Washington announced its approval of the F-16 transfers on Friday, with training of Ukraine pilots set to begin this month. Zelensky said alongside Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte during a visit to the Eindhoven air force base in the Netherlands, that the decision is “historic, powerful and inspiring for us”.
KILLER NURSE SENTENCING - A British nurse will be sentenced today for murdering seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others while they were in her care. Lucy Letby was convicted of killing five boys and two girls, making her the UK’s most prolific child serial killer in modern history. The prosecution said Letby attacked her young and often prematurely born victims by either injecting them with air, overfeeding them with milk or poisoning them with insulin.
BIDEN HAWAII - President Joe Biden is heading to Hawaii today to view the widespread damage from the recent Maui wildfires, meet with survivors and fend off political criticism that his government was too slow to respond to the disaster, which claimed at least 114 lives.
CALIFORNIA STORM - California is bracing for its first tropical storm in 84 years with almost 1000 flights cancelled and the ongoing actors’ strike called off due to the impending extreme weather. At least nine million people are under flood warnings. Storm Hilary is expected to bring torrential rains and winds to cities like Los Angeles and surrounding desert and mountainous areas.
RUSSIA LUNAR CRASH - The Luna-25 probe, Russia’s first Moon mission in almost 50 years, has crashed after an unspecified incident during pre-landing manoeuvres. According to preliminary findings by the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, the lander “has ceased to exist following a collision with the Moon’s surface”.
FOOTBALL - Spain has won the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history, with skipper Olga Carmona sweeping in the only goal for a 1-0 victory over England in Sunday’s final. In front of a crowd of nearly 76,000 at Stadium Australia in Sydney, Spain are the fifth team to lift the World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
TENNIS - Novak Djokovic needed five match points and nearly four hours to pull off a gritty victory over Carlos Alcaraz and claim a third ATP Cincinnati Open title last night. A titanic struggle between the world’s top two players saw Djokovic save a match point before coming through on his own fifth match point for a 5-7, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/4) triumph. Alcaraz will remain number one in the world and will be the top seed while defending his title at the US Open, which starts on August 28. In the women, Coco Gauff captured the biggest title of her career, powering past Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4 to win the championship.
PARIS OLYMPICS SWIMMING - The swimming stage of a triathlon in Paris’s Seine River was cancelled on Sunday due to pollution, raising further questions about holding competitions there during the 2024 Olympics. The mixed relay triathlon is the third pre-Olympics test event to be affected by excessive E. coli bacteria in the water, but organisers insist the Seine will be fit to host events next year.
