CAR ACCIDENT - A 22-year-old female driver who was involved in a severe road accident on the A6 on Wednesday afternoon has passed away due to her injuries. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle collided with another car that was merging onto the motorway. She was then taken to the hospital after receiving initial medical assistance at the accident site. She succumbed to her grievous injuries on Wednesday evening at the hospital. A police inquiry has been initiated.

TOURISM UP - Tourism in the Grand Duchy has bounced back this year, as Vianden Castle set a new personal record for visitor numbers, according to a ministerial report. Tourism minister Lex Delles told the press yesterday that the sector has returned to pre-pandemic levels in Luxembourg. Although campsites have been somewhat less popular than expected, perhaps due to poor weather, youth hostels have accounted for 20% of all overnight stays in Luxembourg. The most-visited attraction in 2023 so far has been the fairytale amusement park “Parc Merveilleux” in Bettembourg.

TRUMP MUGSHOT - Donald Trump has become the first former president in US history to have his mugshot taken and released by authorities after he was formally arrested in the state of Georgia. Trump is facing charges of plotting to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results. Speaking after leaving jail, the former President said he was innocent.

PUTIN ADDRESS - President Putin has made his first comments on a plane crash in Russia that is presumed to have killed the former paramilitary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and other senior members of his Wagner group. He sent his condolences to Prigozhin’s family and said he was a “talented person” who “made serious mistakes in life”.

F-16 PILOT TRAINING - The Pentagon has said it will begin training Ukrainian F-16 pilots in the United States starting next month so they can use the advanced aircraft against Russian forces. The training will take place at Morris Air National Guard Base in Arizona. According to the White House, President Joe Biden and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky spoke yesterday and discussed the training programme.

EUROPE HEAT - The sizzling temperatures experienced by several countries in southern Europe over the past days are part of a series of brutally hot, dry summers caused by climate change. Spain has been sweltering under its fourth heatwave of the season, while hundreds of firefighters in Greece are struggling to tame major wildfires, leaving 20 dead.

CHARLES FRANCE - King Charles III will travel to France for a state visit next month, several months after a scheduled trip was cancelled due to protests. During the visit from September 20-22, Britain’s head of state and his wife Queen Camilla will visit Paris and Bordeaux.

FOOTBALL - The head of Spain’s football federation is stepping down, after growing criticism about how he had kissed the star player Jenny Hermoso on the lips, after her team’s world cup win. Luis Rubiales will hand in his resignation today.

RUGBY - The final warm-up matches for this year’s Rugby World Cup are this weekend with holders South Africa facing New Zealand today and Australia heading to tournament hosts and leading contenders France on Sunday. France Head coach Fabien Galthie has announced that Matthieu Jalibert will start at fly-half in the match against Australia. Jalibert stands in for the injured Romain Ntamack, who will miss the tournament with a serious knee injury.
