US SHOOTING Two Israeli embassy staffers have been shot dead outside a Jewish museum in Washington, with the US government and Israeli diplomats expressing shock and outrage over the attack. Washington officials confirmed the shooter was in custody.

WEST BANK SHOTS – Several nations that have backed Israel have voiced outrage after Israeli troops fired what they called “warning shots” as foreign diplomats visited the occupied West Bank. AFP footage from Jenin showed the delegation and accompanying journalists running for cover as shots were heard. The Israeli military said the diplomatic convoy strayed from the approved route and entered a restricted zone.

TRUMP SOUTH AFRICA – President Trump shocked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday by playing a video in the Oval Office that claimed white farmers are being persecuted in South Africa, escalating tensions with allegations of genocide and prompting awkward, on-camera exchanges between the two leaders. Trump’s administration earlier this month granted refugee status to more than 50 white Afrikaners, despite the fact that it has effectively stopped taking asylum seekers from the rest of the world. The South African president disputed Trump’s claims.

QATAR AIRFORCE ONE – US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has accepted the Boeing 747 that the Gulf emirate of Qatar offered to President Donald Trump for use as Air Force One. Qatar’s offer of the jet -- which is valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars -- has raised huge constitutional and ethical questions, as well as security concerns about using an aircraft donated by a foreign power for use as the ultra-sensitive presidential plane.

FOOTBALL – Brennan Johnson’s scrambled goal ended a 17-year Tottenham trophy drought with a battling 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final last night. Spurs, who had not won European silverware since 1984, will play in next season’s Champions League, while failing to qualify for it is a severe financial set-back for Manchester United.

In France, Cedric Kipre’s second-half header grabbed Reims a 1-1 draw against Metz in the first leg of their Ligue 1 relegation/promotion playoff. The second leg takes place next Thursday.

CYCLING – Richard Carapaz won stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia yesterday, as Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro kept hold of his overall lead in the Grand Tour. Today’s stage is 172km from Modena to Viadana.

TENNISThe Laver Cup will return to London in 2026 with the O2 Arena set to host the annual battle between Europe and the rest of the world’s best male players. The 2026 version will take place from September 25-27.

Weather

The day is starting off quite cloudy, particularly in the north of the country, with cooler temperatures of between 8 and 10°C. The cloud cover should reduce from late morning but temperatures will stay a bit on the low side, with an expected high of just 17°C.
