Sprinting shoppers, rationed mineral water and not a roll of toilet paper to be seen: panic-buying sparked by coronavirus is soaring across the world. A particularly violent argument about toilet paper erupted in a Woolworths in western Sydney.

Footage of the incident was widely shared on social media. The video shows how three women get into a heated argument after two of them stacked up their trolley with an abundance of toilet paper. The argument quickly turned violent, with one woman shouting “I just want one pack” and exchanging blows.

A staff member attempted to separate the troublemakers before alerting the police. No arrests were made but a police inspector lamented the willingness to resort to violence amid the coronavirus panic-buying.

“It’s just bad behaviour by people that are panicking, and there’s no need for that panic. It’s not the Thunderdome. It’s not Mad Max. We don’t need to do that,” he explained. He added that “there is no need for people to go out and panic buy at supermarkets, paracetamol and canned food or toilet paper.”

The number of cases from the new coronavirus topped 100,000 worldwide on Saturday.
