Dirk de Fauw, mayor and solicitor of the Flemish Christian-Democratic Party (CD&V), reveals his attacker was also a client of his. The incident occurred during a planned meeting on Saturday when the man lashed out, resulting in a 14cm long cut along his throat.

De Fauw lost a lot of blood and needed 24 stitches. But the mayor maintained he was lucky his assailant only used a small kitchen knife: “If it would have been a bigger knife, I would probably not be talking to you right now.”

De Fauw had defended his attacker in court on numerous occasions, but claims he never expected to be at the receiving end himself. The man is now facing charges of attempted murder.
