
The 40-year-old’s interrogation is planned for Tuesday, according to the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in Stuttgart. The man, who allegedly drove a car through a pedestrian zone on Monday in Mannheim, has since been released from hospital and taken into police custody.
He was injured during his arrest, and the LKA indicated evidence suggesting he shot himself in the mouth with a blank-firing pistol. According to the public prosecutor’s office, there are also indications that he is mentally ill.
The German national from Ludwigshafen, Rhineland-Palatinate, allegedly sped through a pedestrian zone in Mannheim on Monday, killing two people and injuring eleven others, five of them seriously.
The suspect has multiple prior convictions, including for posting a hate comment under an image classified as far-right on Facebook. Despite this 2018 conviction, the public prosecutor’s office initially ruled out a political motive.
