RISING PRICES - Luxembourg is grappling with surging prices, triggering a new wage indexation this month. The annual inflation rate in Luxembourg now “stands at 4.2%, compared to 3.7% just a month ago. The cost of filling up at the pump surged in August, with diesel prices climbing by 10% and petrol prices by 6.2%. For households preparing for the upcoming winter, the bill for heating oil soared by just over 19% in a single month. Clothing and footwear prices have also registered a striking increase within a month.

PETROL PRICES - Unleaded (95) and super unleaded (98) petrol prices have dropped by around 2 cents overnight. Unleaded petrol (95) will cost €1.644 per litre from today, while super unleaded (98) will drop to €1.896 per litre.

GOODYEAR JOB CUTS - 55 jobs at Goodyear here in Luxembourg are set to be cut. This was announced by the OGBL union yesterday evening. That figure came from the management of Goodyear, which want to talk to unions in the coming days. Earlier Goodyear announced it is set to implement significant internal changes within its European operations.

UKRAINE WAR - The United States will provide depleted uranium tank ammunition to Ukraine as part of more than $1 billion in military and humanitarian aid. The 120mm rounds are for M1 Abrams tanks that are expected to be delivered to Ukraine before the end of the year. The announcement comes as Ukraine battles Russian forces in a slow-moving counteroffensive against Moscow’s troops and Ukraine accused Russia of killing 17 people in a missile attack on a market street. Overnight, suspected Ukrainian drone attacks were reported on the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and near Moscow.

EAST ASIA SUMMIT - US Vice President Kamala Harris, Chinese premier Li Qiang and Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov are attending an East Asia summit in Indonesia, offering an opportunity for direct, high-level diplomacy between the rivals.The meeting brought Washington and Beijing into contact a day after Premier Li Qiang warned major powers must manage their differences to avoid a “new Cold War”, ahead of the G20 summit in New Delhi this week.

EUROPE STORMS - Storms have killed at least 14 people in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, with a Greek region hit by more rain in 24 hours than it normally sees in a year. A period of extreme heat has given way to heavy storms, turning streets in northwestern Turkey into rivers and hitting Greece with unprecedented downpours as it recovers from weeks of wildfires.

ENTERTAINMENT - Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps is to receive the Tiff Tribute Performer Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival on Saturday. Krieps is appearing in Toronto for the world premiere of 19th-century Western romantic drama The Dead Don’t Hurt, in which she stars opposite Viggo Mortensen. And the Rolling Stones have unveiled their first album of original material since 2005. Hackney Diamonds will feature 12 tracks and will be released on 20 October.

TENNIS - Top seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Wednesday to cruise into the US Open semi-finals and keep his title defence on track. The Spaniard will play third seed Daniil Medvedev on Friday for a place in the final after sweeping Zverev aside 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in another clinical performance. And Madison Keys stunned Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, beating her 6-1, 6-4 in 1hr 26min. The American 17th seed will play second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus later today for a place in the final.

RUGBY - The World Cup kicks off tomorrow with France taking on New Zealand. France head coach Fabien Galthie said it was “an honour” for the host nation to play New Zealand in the World Cup’s opening match as he named a team including Yoram Moefana. Moefana replaces La Rochelle’s Jonathan Danty who suffered a hamstring injury late last month and will miss Friday’s highly-anticipated match at the Stade de France in Paris.
