The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its latest advisory that Cristina – downgraded from a tropical storm – had sustained winds of 35 miles (55 kilometers) per hour, with higher gusts.
On its current trajectory, Cristina would likely make landfall overnight and continue inland Thursday, dissipating over Guatemala, according to NHC.
"While a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the coast of El Salvador, the primary hazard will likely be continued heavy rainfall leading to flooding and mudslides over higher terrain", an NHC note said.
Guatemalan authorities meanwhile reported that a landslide in the town of Nahuala had left one child dead, marking the the first fatality attributed to Cristina.
Damage was reported to homes and businesses along the coasts of El Salvador and Guatemala due to powerful waves and flooding from the storm.
Schools and universities in El Salvador were closed Wednesday due to the approaching storm, with the closures extended through Thursday.
