
SOCIAL ELECTIONS - Over 600,000 employees are eligible to vote in the social elections today. All current and former private sector workers are eligible to vote, including young workers aged 16 and unemployed individuals. Since 1993, non-Luxembourgish residents and cross-border workers also have the right to vote. Voters are electing 60 union representatives to the Chamber of Employees (CSL) which proposes laws to parliament or gives opinions on proposed legislation.
PRODUCT RECALL - The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) has issued a recall of a Salakis product over potential contamination concerns. The recall specifically targets Salakis cheese cubes seasoned with Provence herbs, packaged in jars.
STREET NAMES - Luxembourg City will be giving eight streets honorary names to commemorate influential women, addressing the current disparity where only 54 out of 455 streets are named after women. The initiative, especially focused around the Geesseknäppchen Campus, seeks to increase the visibility of deserving women in public spaces.
GERMANY STRIKES - Transport strikes in Germany again today. On the railways and with Lufthansa. There will be repercussions for Luxembourg passengers. Flights from Frankfurt this morning as well as many trains have been cancelled. It is advised to check timetables and alternatives routes ahead of any travel. BIDEN POLAND - US President Joe Biden is hosting Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk at the White House today to try to reassure the key NATO ally of Washington’s support after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Duda urged NATO allies before the visit to up their spending in response to growing fears about Moscow’s aggression, and will reportedly ask Biden to send more US troops to the alliance’s eastern flank with Russia.
HAITI VIOLENCE - Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has agreed to resign and make way for a transitional authority, after a regional meeting on a gang uprising that has plunged Haiti into violent chaos. Haiti now has no president or parliament and has not held an election since 2016.
US ELECTION - It’s another Primary election day in the United States. Primaries for both parties take place in Georgia, Mississippi, Washington and Hawaii. Donald Trump is expected to win the necessary delegate votes and is likely to then officially become a presidential candidate. President Biden is the likely Democratic nominee for the presidential election.
COVID STUDY - Covid-19 caused the average life expectancy of people worldwide to fall by 1.6 years during the first two years of the pandemic, a more dramatic decline than previously thought. According to a major study, this marked a sharp reversal during a decades-long rise in global life expectancy. Mexico City, Peru and Bolivia were some of the places were life expectancy fell the most.
FOOTBALL - In football’s Champions League, tonight sees more matches in the last round of 16. Porto has a 1-0 advantage when they meet Arsenal. And Barcelona and Napoli have a tie level at 1-1 after the first leg in Italy.
In the German Cup, the DFB Pokal, the match between Saarbrücken and Moenchengladbach is taking place tonight. This game was cancelled at the beginning of February due to too much rain.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in extra time but the Al Nassr side have been dumped out of the Asian Champions League quarter-finals on penalties by Al Ain. Ronaldo was the only Al Nassr player to score in the shootout as his Saudi side went out 3-1 on penalties.
TENNIS - Luca Nardi has scored the biggest win of his young career, beating world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the Indian Wells Masters. The world number 123 from Italy ended Djokovic’s 11-match win streak at Masters events, with Nardi bettering the childhood tennis idol whose poster hung above his bed from the age of eight. In the women’s draw, reigning women’s Grand Slam champions Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff have reached the fourth round with challenging straight-set wins.
