Luxembourg City joins the 'Affichons l'égalité' initiative by giving eight streets honorary names to commemorate influential women who challenged gender stereotypes, addressing the current disparity where only 54 out of 455 streets are named after women.
Luxembourg City has announced its participation in the 'Affichons l'égalité' ('Display equality') initiative, spearheaded by the National Women's Council. The initiative aims to address the stark disparity between the number of streets named after men and women in the capital.
In a bid to rectify this imbalance, the municipality of Luxembourg City will be giving eight streets honorary names to commemorate remarkable women who have played crucial roles in challenging gender stereotypes and transforming Luxembourg society.
Currently, out of 455 streets in Luxembourg City, only 54 bear the names of women, compared to 401 named after men. The initiative, especially focused around the Geesseknäppchen Campus, seeks to increase the visibility of deserving women in public spaces, thereby inspiring future generations and raising awareness among local secondary school pupils.
