
NIEDERKORN MURDER - The suspected perpetrator of the murders in Niederkorn has been charged with homicide and manslaughter. In addition, the prosecutor has included charges of violating weapons laws. The 74-year-old is currently being held in custody in Schrassig prison, after being brought before magistrates on Tuesday. The suspect was taken into custody on Monday following the fatal shooting of a couple in Niederkorn. The victims, a man and a woman, were said to be the suspect’s next-door neighbours.
COVID LAWS - A new Covid law will be passed in parliament this afternoon. The government wants to reduce the restrictions to a minimum, reducing the isolation period to 4 days and stopping contact tracing all together. Meanwhile, long-Covid is now officially recognized in this country. A cure for people with persistent long-Covid symptoms is from now on included in medical records and services, and will therefore be covered by health insurance.
PRODUCT RECALL - Lima brand rice waffles have been recalled as cancer-causing toxins have been found. These toxins develop due to specific mold, which can arise in a humid environment or higher temperatures. The product has been removed from the shelves of different stores.
ROYAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARY - It’s the 10th wedding anniversary of the hereditary Grand Ducal couple. On the 20 October 2012, Prince Guillaume married Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy at the Notre Dame Cathedral in the presence of 1,400 guests. The Palace has published new images of the couple to mark their ten-year anniversary.
UKRAINE POWER CUTS - Ukraine has informed residents that power cuts will be implemented across it’s entire electricity grid starting at 7am today, to cope with sustained strikes on energy infrastructure by Russian drones. President Zelensky said after a meeting with energy companies that they were preparing “for all possible scenarios with a view to winter”. He added that the government was “working on the creation of mobile power supply points in cities and villages”. The Ukrainian president will join the EU summit by videolink in Brussels today, where he will also ask for generators, which are needed urgently.
EU ENERGY CRISIS - According to Eurostat, inflation is currently at 9.9% across the eurozone- the highest level since the introduction of the euro. In the Baltics and also in Hungary, inflation is currently over 20%. High prices, especially for energy, are also a topic today and tomorrow in Brussels. EU heads of state and government are coming together for a summit to discuss further ways out of the energy crisis. The main topic will be how to succeed in reducing gas prices.
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP DRAW - The draw for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place on Saturday in Auckland with the women’s game at an all-time high and the United States and England the teams to beat. The World Cup will be staged at 10 stadiums in New Zealand and Australia from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
TENNIS LUXEMBOURG - In tennis, today is the start of the Luxembourg Ladies Masters at the Coque. 8 former tennis greats, including 3 former number 1s from the WTA world rankings, will face each other in this first edition until the final on Sunday. The match between Mandy Minella and Belgium’s Kim Clijsters starts this evening at 6 o’clock. Then there is the duel between the German Julia Görges and Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland. The winner will receive a prize money of €40,00.
