PETROL PRICES - Petrol prices have gone up again today, following a diesel price increase at the beginning of the week. A litre of SP95 is now €1.58, an increase of 2.3 cents. The same will apply to SP98, which will cost €1.80 a litre Diesel remains unchanged.

CONTRACEPTIVES ACCESS - Luxembourg has claimed the top spot in Europe for access to contraceptives. This milestone follows a landmark decision last year for the state to fully cover the costs of many contraceptives. Luxembourg scored 94.2%, surpassing contenders like the UK and France. The percentages reflect the level of information regarding access to contraception in each country, as well as the extent of reimbursement for these products.

UKRAINE SOLIDARITY - On the second anniversary of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Luxembourgish association supporting Ukrainians locally and abroad will host a solidarity march on the 24 February. It starts in front of the Gare at 1.45pm. The route then takes the group to Place Clairefontaine, with a commemoration closing off the event.

THIEF CAUGHT - The police have reported a burglary in Diekirch earlier this week, where neighbours managed to apprehend a thief. On the afternoon of 13 February, two alert neighbours spotted a thief attempting to break into a residence on Promenade de la Sûre in Diekirch. On realising he had been noticed, the perpetrator attempted to flee, but was swiftly apprehended by the neighbours. By the time the police arrived, the burglar had been restrained by the residents. He was arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday morning.

World

US SHOOTING - Three people have been arrested in the US state of Missouri after a shooting at a Super Bowl victory parade in Kansas City. One person was killed and more than 20 others were wounded. The Kansas City Chiefs star player Travis Kelce said he was heartbroken.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted on going ahead with a ground offensive against Hamas in Rafah, in southern Gaza. Netanyahu said powerful action was needed. The UN and many governments around the world have warned against the action, without a plan to protect civilians.

NATO MEETING - Allied Defence Ministers will meet at NATO Headquarters in Brussels today. The meeting will be chaired by the NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

MUNICH SECURITY CONFERENCE - US Vice-President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are heading to Europe to take part in the Munich Security Conference, starting tomorrow. The trip comes as Ukraine is beginning to feel the pinch from a lack of new US weapons and ammunition. The Senate has approved a $95 billion package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, but House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump ally, has refused to put it to a vote in the lower chamber.

AMAZON RAINFOREST - Scientists are warning of dire consequences for the world, from pressures on the Amazon rainforest. Computer modelling indicates that deforestation, drought and fire could push up to half of it into irreversible collapse by the middle of the century.

Sport

FOOTBALL - Ciro Immobile fired Lazio towards a first Champions League quarter-final in nearly a quarter of a century in last night’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich. In the other match last night, Kylian Mbappe scored the opening goal as Paris Saint-Germain beat Real Sociedad 2-0.

TENNIS - The women’s world number one Iga Swiatek has reached the Qatar Open quarter-finals for a third successive year as fellow four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka also made the last eight without hitting a ball. Swiatek, the two-time defending champion at the Gulf event, defeated 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-4. Osaka advanced earlier in the day after Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko pulled out with an elbow injury.

Weather

We can expect a brief morning shower or two, but the rest of the day should remain dry, but cloudy. There is even a chance of the sun finding its way through the cloud cover throughout the day. Temperatures start off between 7°C and 8°C in the morning, and will then rise to a comfortable high of 13°C in the afternoon.
