SCOUTS JAMBOREE EVACUATION - South Korea is evacuating tens of thousands of scouts by bus from a coastal jamboree, due to the approaching Tropical Storm Khanun. Evacuations have started this morning to move the 36.000 scouts – mostly teenagers – from the World Scout Jamboree. Korean media have called the jamboree “a national disgrace” after an extreme heatwave caused hundreds of scouts to fall ill and prompted American and British scout groups to withdraw. A total of 255 scouts from Luxembourg are taking part in the event. According to Scouting in Luxembourg, the participants will be taken to safe places in the South Korean interior.

AMAZON SUMMIT - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will host a regional summit of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation today, where leaders from Amazon-sharing countries will discuss a roadmap to save the Amazon rainforest. The meeting will also serve as a rehearsal for the COP30 UN climate talks to be held in Belem in 2025.

NIGER COUP - West Africa’s regional bloc says heads of state will meet on Thursday about the next steps after Niger’s military junta defied to bloc’s deadline to reinstate the country’s ousted president. Sunday’s deadline warned of military force if the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum isn’t returned to power.

GERMANY BOMB - The discovery of an unexploded American air force bomb dating from the second World War has led to the temporary evacuation of 13,000 residents of the German city of Dusseldorf. Bomb disposal experts have been working overnight to defuse the 500kg device. It has now been disabled and people have been allowed to return home.

RYAIN AIR STRIKE - Ryanair pilots will strike again next week in Belgium. Unions confirmed that the strike will go ahead on the 14 and 15th August as agreements about an increase in salaries have not been reached. Flights from Charleroi will be affected.

SINEAD O’CONNOR FUNERAL - Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of a seaside town in the Republic of Ireland later today for the funeral of singer and activist Sinead O’Connor. She died at her home in London last month and while the cause of death hasn’t been released, police say it wasn’t suspicious. People have been invited by Sinead O’Connor’s family to line the seafront in Bray, Co Wicklow where she used to live to say a “last goodbye”. Since her death, fans have left flowers and messages outside her former home.

CAUSE OF DEATH - An inmate at the Givenich detention centre died of natural causes. Minister for Justice Sam Tanson confirmed the cause of death at the beginning of July and provided more information about the conditions in which he was being held.According to the minister, the man was found lying in his bed by a prison officer and pronounced dead by the nurse on duty. A doctor on the scene then concluded that he had died of natural causes.

BISSEN WATER - The municipality of Bissen has announced the detection of a major leak in the water system on rue de Finsterthal. As a result, the municipality is asking its residents to use the drinking water as sparingly as possible; this will apply until the all-clear is given.

ECHTERNACH ARRESTS - Police have reported the arrest of a knife-wielding man near Echternach Gare on Monday afternoon. According to the report, two men raised concerns for handling knives and drinking alcohol on Route de Luxembourg around noon. When the two were found near Echternach Gare, one of them quickly became uncooperative and violent towards the police officers. As a result, he was immobilised and placed in a sobering-up cell.

FOOTBALL - In the Women’s World Cup, today’s matches in the knockout stage are Colombia vs Jamaica, France takes on Morocco. England scraped past Nigeria on penalties on Monday and will be joined by an Australia side. European champions England will play either Colombia or Jamaica in the last eight on Saturday whilst Australia will play either France or Morocco.

FOOTBALL RAMOS - Portugal attacker Goncalo Ramos has joined Paris Saint-Germain from Benfica on a one-year loan deal with an option to buy. Ramos came through the Portuguese club’s academy and scored 19 league goals in 30 matches last season.

Banks of mist and fog are likely to greet Luxembourg this Tuesday morning, making way for a partly cloudy sky, and a bit less sunshine than yesterday. It will get more overcast towards the evening with a chance of rain.Temperatures will range from a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius to highs of 18 degrees.
