
The officer was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The incident took place in the northern city of Groningen.
The police officer, who was patrolling the city with a colleague, stopped two cyclists who were flouting the coronavirus curfew law, currently in place between 9pm and 4.30am. When requesting an explanation, one of the cyclists brandished a knife and stabbed the officer in the face, media report. The other police officer called emergency services, but could not stop the two.
There is still no trace of the two perpetrators. Authorities are checking CCTV footage and calling on witnesses to contact their relevant police department.
