Prime Minister Luc Frieden visited Finland on Monday at the invitation of his Finnish counterpart, Petteri Orpo. Luxembourg has maintained diplomatic relations with Finland for over one hundred years. The trip focused heavily on technological collaboration.
While Finland is not Luxembourg’s largest trading partner, bilateral trade remains significant. In 2022, Luxembourg exported $122 million worth of goods – primarily steel products – to Finland, while importing $69 million in Finnish industrial materials, including enzymes, industrial fatty acids, and red zinc.
The centrepiece of Frieden’s visit was a tour of VTT, Finland’s premier technological research centre, where he was shown Europe’s first 50-Qubit quantum computer. Developed in three phases with €21 million in government funding, the system represents a major research milestone: calculations that take traditional computers months are solved in seconds.
Luxembourg, which recently acquired its own supercomputer, aims to integrate quantum capabilities. However, contrary to Finland, the Grand Duchy does not develop these technologies domestically.
On Tuesday, Frieden will meet with Prime Minister Orpo and President Alexander Stubb to discuss geopolitical issues, transatlantic relations, and shared priorities such as cybersecurity and economic resilience.
