BETTEL VIETNAM - Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the Minister Lex Delles are on an official visit to Vietnam for 3 days from today. They are accompanied by a large business delegation. Luxembourg and Vietnam have had diplomatic relations for 50 years.

PEDESTRIAN KILLED - A pedestrian was killed in the middle of the night on Monday. According to the police, the 27-year-old was the victim of an accident that occurred in the middle of the night, around 3:30 am, on a dirt road between Ell and Colpach-Haut. Police experts have been tasked with determining the exact circumstances of the accident, which involved a car. An investigation is underway and an autopsy of the victim will be carried out.

INMATE DEAD - The prison administration has announced that a prisoner was found dead on Monday evening in Schrassig. Prison guards found the man dead in his cell on Monday 1 May, at around 8.15pm.The judicial authorities have been informed and have requested an autopsy.

A1 CLOSURE - The Bridges and Roads Authority has announced another road closure for this coming weekend. Between Friday, 5 May at 10pm and Monday, 8 May at 4am, the Grünewald junction will be closed to traffic in both directions. Luxtram will be installing the second part of the tram bridge that will connect the tram line with Findel airport.

SUDAN CEASEFIRE - Warring generals in Sudan have agreed “in principle” to a seven-day ceasefire, starting tomorrow. Diplomatic efforts have intensified to end more than two weeks of war in Africa’s third-largest country as warnings multiply about a “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis. According to the UN, nearly half a million people have already been forced to flee their homes.

UKRAINE EXPLOSION - An explosive device has derailed a Russian freight train in a region bordering Ukraine ahead of an expected counteroffensive by Kyiv.The last four days have seen two trains derailed by explosions, a suspected drone hitting an oil depot in Crimea that caused a huge blaze and power lines blown up near Saint Petersburg.

EU GRAIN - The EU is limiting imports of grains from Ukraine until further notice. Until the beginning of June, grains may no longer be traded freely in 5 Eastern European countries, including Poland and Hungary. Production costs in these countries were under pressure because Ukrainian products were cheaper. The European Commission has reached a deal guaranteeing the transit of Ukrainian cereals, after import bans imposed by these countries were called “unacceptable” by Brussels.

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY - Today is World Press Freedom Day and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the international community to call for a stop on the detention and imprisonment of journalists for doing their jobs. He said that freedom of the press is under attack in every corner of the world. The organisation Reporters Without Borders has called on the UN to intervene with the Russian authorities to secure the release of the Wall Street Journalist Evan Gershkovich, currently detained in Russia on espionage charges. Reporters Without Borders have placed Luxembourg in 21st place in terms of press freedom worldwide.

FOOTBALL - In the German cup, RB Leipzig is in the final. That after a clear 5-1 success yesterday evening in Freiburg. Tonight, Stuttgart meets Frankfurt. In the English football championship, Arsenal won 3-1 against Chelsea yesterday. Tonight, Manchester City will play West Ham, and Liverpool will play Fulham.

WORLD CUP RIGHTS - FIFA president Gianni Infantino has threatened a television blackout of this year’s Women’s World Cup in major European countries unless broadcasters improve their offers for rights. Infantino has accused broadcasters of offering between $1 million and $10 million to show the championship, compared to the $100-200 million they pay for the men’s version.The five countries are thought to be Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
