The idea of the global Earth Hour movement, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is to raise awareness about climate change. In cooperation with the world’s population, they are urging political leaders to finally act in terms of climate change.
According to WWF Germany, it’s important to limit the rise in temperature across the globe to a maximum 1,5 degrees celsius as this could otherwise have devastating consequences for the planet and for humanity. The WWF estimates that, if we cannot get the increase in temperature under control, one out of six species will become extinct.
To fight climate change and raise awareness, people were urged to turn their lights off for an hour at 8.30 pm on Saturday.
Earth Hour was first initiated by WWF Australia with the aim of fighting excessive consumption of electricity. One year later the movement turned into a global one as 100 million people participated. In 2019, Earth Hour took place on 20. March and people from 180 countries took part.
