The Grand Est region recorded a considerable decline in new death and infection rates last Monday.

Tuesday’s update was less favorable but nevertheless attested to a gradual stablisation of the situation. The region counted 2,166 deaths since the outbreak and 41 new fatalities on Tuesday.

4,993 patients remain hospitalised and a total of 4,928 were released from hospital since the outbreak. The overall trend is positive: increasing numbers of patients are recovering and fewer new infections are recorded.

Care homes worst affected

The regional health agency explained on Tuesday evening that care homes for the elderly and other medico-welfare establishments accounted for almost 1,500 deaths.

This number is synonymous with almost two thirds of all deaths that were recorded in the region since the beginning of the pandemic.

1,127 of them passed away in a care home and 308 died at the hospital.

Confirmed or suspected infections among residents of care homes and similar establishments amounted to 7,782.

There were also 3,975 infections among staff working, which further attests to the fact that care homes and medico-welfare establishments remain a particularly sensitive breeding ground for the spreading of the virus.
