CAR ACCIDENT Ten people were injured in a major traffic accident involving a Luxembourgish minibus yesterday near Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. All occupants of the minibus were injured, at least two seriously, while the two passengers in the other vehicle received moderate injuries. OCTAVE ENDS – The Octave, Luxembourg’s well-loved two-week religious event has concluded with the traditional closing procession, during which a statue of the Virgin Mary was carried through Luxembourg City’s historic old town. Despite poor weather conditions, large crowds turned out to take part in the centuries-old tradition.

PALME D’OR – The Palme d’Or, the top prize for Best Feature Film at the Cannes Film Festival, has been awarded to ‘Un simple accident’, a Luxembourgish co-production directed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The film, which tackles the sensitive issue of political prisoners and offers a sharp critique of Iran’s regime, triumphed over 21 other contenders.

SWITZERLAND DEATHS Six people have died in Switzerland over the weekend in accidents in the Alps. Rescuers found the bodies of five skiers in the mountains near the resort of Zermatt, while in a separate incident, an avalanche claimed the life of a 29-year-old near Bern. Authorities have opened an investigation into the incidents and are working to identify the victims.

GAZA WAR A deadly strike on a Gaza City school has sparked renewed international outcry over the worsening humanitarian crisis. Palestinian rescuers said an Israeli strike at dawn this morning killed at least 20 people. The intensified fighting has drawn condemnation from the international community as an aid blockade lasting almost three months has worsened shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine in the Gaza Strip.

TRUMP EU TARIFFS – President Trump says he has granted the European Union another month to conclude a trade deal and avert the imposition of new sanctions. He threatened on Friday to impose tariffs of 50% on European imports. But following a telephone call with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump said he agreed to extend the deadline for negotiations until July 9.

UKRAINE WAR – US President Donald Trump has called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin “crazy” after Moscow launched a deadly barrage of drones against Ukraine, even as the warring countries completed a large-scale prisoner exchange. At least 13 people were killed when Russia launched a record number of drones against Ukraine overnight to Sunday. His comments mark a rare rebuke to Putin, who he often speaks of with admiration.

GAMES OF SMALL STATES OF EUROPE The Games of the Small States of Europe start in Andorra this evening with a grand opening ceremony at 9.30pm. Luxembourg has sent a record delegation of 165 athletes to the 20th edition of the Games, taking place until 31 May. Medal hopefuls for Luxembourg include Vera Hoffmann, competing in the 1500m, Victoria Rausch in the 100m, 100m hurdles and relay, Alex Kirsch in cycling, Marie Schreiber in Cyclo-Cross and Jenny Warling in Karate.

FOOTBALLGerson Rodrigues has been included in the Luxembourg national football team squad for the two upcoming friendly matches against Slovenia and Ireland. Politicians across Luxembourg, including former tennis player and Democratic Party (DP) MP Mandy Minella, Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) MP Taina Bofferding and former footballer and DP MP Barbara Agostino have questioned the controversial decision. The national team’s top scorer was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended, at the end of April for domestic violence and assault and battery.

Union Saint-Gilloise have ended a 90-year wait as they clinched their 12th Belgian league title with a 3-1 final-round home victory over Gent. They finished three points clear of defending champions Club Brugge. The team includes Luxembourg’s national goalkeeper Anthony Morris.

And in the English Premier League, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle have secured places in next season’s Champions League. Meanwhile Liverpool celebrated with the Premier League trophy after a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in Sunday’s dramatic final round.

CYCLING – Spain’s Carlos Verona has won stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia while Team UAE’s Isaac Del Toro remains in the overall lead.
