The accident took place around 4pm on Monday, on the popular tourist route linking the Moselle town of Contz-les-Bains to Schengen in Luxembourg.
Two cars collided head-on, leaving one person dead and another with serious injuries. The victim was a 76 year old man living in Amnéville, according to the Républicain Lorrain.
The other driver, a 37 year old man, was taken to Mercy hospital and is said to be in critical condition. Both men had to be cut out of the wreckage.
The CR152 was closed in both directions to allow access for the emergency services.
