A Belgian police officer and a suspect were killed late Tuesday night during a high-speed chase that crossed from Belgium into France, ending in a fatal crash between Angevillers and Thionville.

The pursuit began around 11pm in Belgium after a motorist reportedly refused to stop for a police check. The chase continued into French territory, where, around 11.30pm, a Belgian police car collided with the fleeing vehicle as both headed toward Thionville.

Two individuals died at the scene, according to Le Républicain Lorrain, including one officer and one of the fugitives. Emergency services and police were dispatched in large numbers.

Some social media users claimed to have heard gunfire during the incident, though this has not been confirmed by authorities.

The road was closed during the overnight rescue operation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact events leading up to the crash.
