
BODY IN FRANCE - According to the Portuguese language newspaper Contacto, the identity of the young woman, whose body was found in a French town close to the border on 19 September has now been identified. The Luxembourg Public Prosecutor’s office confirmed that the victim, was a Portuguese woman, who lived in Luxembourg. There is no further information on the woman’s identity.
EU FINANCE - Today is the second day of the EU Finance Ministers Meeting in Luxembourg. The main subjects will be investments in renewable energies and how to get away from fossil fuel energy from Russia. About 300 billion euros have been earmarked for this.
LUXEMBOURG COVID - The constitutional court has judged that the national Covid laws did not infringe on the country’s constitution. The argument was used as a line of defence by two known opponents of pandemic health measures. The two men challenged the legality of Covid measures, after being indicted for not respecting the mask mandate or physical distancing during protests that they organised. Both men are now expected to receive a fine.
NORTH KOREA MISSILE - North Korea has fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over northern Japan. It prompted a warning from the Japanese government for people on the island of Hokkaido to take cover during its flight. It is the first North Korean missile launch over Japan since 2017. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida has strongly condemned the action and called it an act of violence. The UN prohibits North Korea from ballistic and nuclear weapons tests.
UKRAINE GAINS - The Ukrainian military continues to gain ground in the north-east and south of Ukraine – especially in the Kherson region. The advance has been reported by the Russian military and Russian-installed officials in the region.
ZELENSKY & MUSK - Ukrainian President Zelensky has rejected a proposal from Tesla boss Elon Musk. He had proposed his solution to ending the war via Twitter. He suggested re-running the annexation referendums in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian regions under UN supervision, acknowledging Russian sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula and giving Ukraine a neutral status. From the Ukrainian side, the proposal has been sharply criticized and Musk has been accused of supporting Moscow.
EU PHONE CHARGERS - The European Parliament will today vote on the introduction of a uniform mobile phone charging plug in the EU. The majority of MEPs are expected to vote in favour of introducing the USB-C format plug as a standard. USB-C plugs could then be introduced for all mobile phones, tablets and digital cameras from autumn 2024. For laptops, USB-C would probably not become the standard until 2026.
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - It is the 4th match day in the Champions League. Highlights include Bayern Munich playing Pilzen, Barcelona plays InterMilan and Liverpool plays Glasgow Rangers. Tottenham will also play Frankfurt
CYCLING BELGIUM – Today is the one day race from Binche-Chimay and back. The race goes through Wallonia for almost 200 kilometres. 4 Luxembourg cyclists will take part - Kevin Geniets, Alex Kirsch, Alex Kess and Jaques Gloesener.
