
SCHOOL STARTS - It’s back to school for children in Luxembourg’s schools on Friday. According to the Ministry of Education close to 61,000 students are enrolled in primary school this year. In secondary schools, there are 52,500 students and around 5,500 teachers.
SLOVENIA VISIT - The Prime Minister of Slovenia is on an official visit to Luxembourg today. Robert Golob will be received with military honours in Place Clairefontaine in the city. After that, there are meetings with Prime Minister Bettel and Chamber President Etgen. The programme also includes visits to Schengen and the birthplace of Robert Schuman and Clausen.
LUXAIR DELAY - Around 60 Luxair passengers found themselves facing an unexpected extension to their holidays in Italy due to a plane malfunction. According to information obtained by RTL, a malfunction occurred on the rear door of an aircraft. This unanticipated hiccup resulted in the cancellation of the scheduled return flight from Tuscany to Luxembourg on Sunday.
GREENS PROGRAMME - The Greens have presented the “climate and environment package” for their electoral programme. Among other things, the have asked for a national investment fund for energy transition and stated that Luxembourg needs to focus more on green hydrogen.
WINE HARVEST - Around 50 private winegrowers from Luxembourg have begun this year’s harvest. Auxerrois and Pinot Gris are the first grape varieties to be picked. It is expected to be a good year for Luxembourgish wine. The grape-pickers will have their work cut out for them across the vineyards of the Luxembourg Moselle, with the harvest lasting around a month before finishing around 11 October.
RUSSIA NORTH KOREA - An armoured train carrying the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has entered the Russian far-east en route to meet Russian President Putin. The United States has said it is concerned North Korea could sell weapons to Russia for the war in Ukraine.
LIBYA FLOODS - Floods in Libya are reported to have killed 2,000 people and many more are missing, after a powerful storm swept through the east of the country. The worst affected place was the port of Derna where two dams and four bridges have collapsed.
MOROCCO EARTHQUAKE - In Morocco, the search for survivors after the earthquake continues. For the rescue teams it is a race against time. Especially in the regions that are difficult to access. So far, almost 2,800 deaths and almost as many wounded have been counted.
FOOTBALL - A solid defeat for the Luxembourg national football team last night. In the European Championship qualification, Portugal romped to a record 9-0 win over Luxembourg . The campaign continues on 13 October with an away match against Iceland.
Staying with football, nine months before Euro 2024 kicks off in Germany, the hosts have turned to Rudi Voeller to get the team back on track before today’s friendly against France, after coach Hansi Flick was sacked. Flick became the first Germany coach in history to be relieved of his duties after his side slumped to a 4-1 loss to Japan in Wolfsburg on Saturday, the latest in a run of poor results which included a group-stage exit at the World Cup in Qatar last year.
RUGBY - With the Olympic Games in Paris less than a year away, World Cup organisers have faced questions over access to the stadiums in Marseille and Bordeaux. On Saturday in Marseille, thousands of spectators missed the start to the rugby clash between England and Argentina due to bottlenecks outside the stadium. And in Bordeaux, many Ireland fans missed the start of their team’s crushing 82-8 win over Romania on Saturday due to problems with the public transport.
