
SHELLFISH NOROVIRUS - The food safety authority has issued a warning over certain shellfish products from the brand “Kermarée”, over fears they may contain norovirus. The products in question have been withdrawn from shelves. According to the press release, they were notably sold in Auchan. Norovirus can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
COVID / FLU - The Ministry of Health said that the number of Covid and flu infections dropped somewhat in the last week of the year 2022. The number of people testing positive for Covid-19 over the past week dropped to 777, less than half the number than the week before. Six more people died of coronavirus-related causes, with an average age of 77. The number of flu infections dropped 65% compared to the previous week but authorities have warned that it is too early to say whether the peak of the flu epidemic has passed.
POLICE SCAMS - Luxembourg’s financial regulator, the CSSF has issued a fresh warning about scammers posing as police officers. In most cases, the scammers approach elderly victims, claiming a family member has been involved in an accident and must pay tens of thousands of euros in order to bail them out. Should you receive or have received such a call, contact the police immediately and do not under any circumstances comply with the requests.
DIESEL PRICE - The price of diesel is dropping significantly at service stations in Luxembourg today. It is going down by 5.3 cents, to 1.57 euros per litre. As for petrol, there is no change.
US CONGRESS - The US House of Representatives has plunged deeper into crisis as Republican favorite Kevin McCarthy failed again to win the speakership -- entrenching a three-day standoff that has paralyzed the lower chamber of Congress.
CLIMATE CHANGE - A study has warned that half of the world’s glaciers are likely to disappear by the end of the century because of climate change. It estimates they will vanish even if the global temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Meanwhile Europe’s record-breaking warm winter weather has closed ski slopes and forced resorts to open summer trails or shut altogether. Eight countries across the continent have recorded their warmest January day ever, with temperatures in parts of Switzerland and southern Germany exceeding 20C and 90 monitoring stations in France setting new records over new year. Several winter sport events in France have been cancelled, postponed or moved because of the abnormally warm temperatures.

FOOTBALL - Defending champions Manchester City beat Chelsea 1-0 last night, to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just five points. https://today.rtl.lu/sport/international/a/2012980.html Bayern Munich has signed Netherlands midfielder Daley Blind. The former Ajax and Manchester United player’s contract will run until the end of the season, with the possibility of an extension. Blind terminated his contract by mutual consent with Dutch giants Ajax in December, six months before it was due to expire, and was officially a free agent.
SKIING GOLD ROSI - Germany’s two-time Olympic gold medal-winning skier Rosi Mittermaier known as ‘Gold Rosi’ has died at the age of 72. Mittermaier’s family told Germany’s SID news agency she “fell asleep peacefully surrounded by her family” on Wednesday after a serious illness. Starting her international career aged 16 in 1967, her greatest successes came a decade later, when she won gold in the downhill and slalom, alongside silver in the giant slalom at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Olympics.
