The Ministry of Health said 2022 ended on a more positive note, as the number of Covid and flu infections dropped somewhat between 26 December and 1 January.

COVID-19

The number of people testing positive for Covid-19 over the past week dropped to 777, compared to 1,656 the previous week.

499 reinfections were recorded, making up 39.1% of positive cases, compared to 1,073 (39.3%) the week before.

Six more people have died of coronavirus-related causes, with an average age of 77.

30 patients were admitted to hospital with Covid for regular treatment, compared to 38 the previous week. The average age among those hospitalised is 66. As of Wednesday, 28 people were in hospital, four of whom are in intensive care.

Just 75 vaccine doses were administered over Christmas week, bringing the total number of doses used in Luxembourg to 1,292,719. As of 2 January, 474,899 people are considered to be fully vaccinated, bringing the vaccine rate up to 79% for the population over the age of 5.

Influenza

Over the past week, the number of flu cases confirmed by Luxembourg's laboratories dropped from 2,552 to 897 - a reduction of 65% compared to the previous week. It is thought this decline is in part due to the Christmas holidays. The authorities have warned that the coming weeks may affect these figures, meaning it is too early to say whether the peak of the flu epidemic has passed.
