RADARS SPEEDING - Around 320,000 motorists were flashed by radars in this country last year. Mainly for speeding and for going through a red light. This year, two new fixed radars will be added to our roads. According to the Luxemburger Wort, they will be placed close to Bereldange on Rue de Bridel and in Saeul.

FIRE GOSTINGEN
-A major fire was reported in Gostingen last night. Five different fire brigades were called into action when the roof of a building on Rue Buurg in Gostingen caught fire. According to reports from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), nobody was injured.

World

EU/NATO - The EU and NATO want to cooperate more closely in the field of defence. A declaration should be signed today, enabling them to respond to threats more effectively. The background is, of course, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is still intense fighting in the east of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address that Russian forces are focused on capturing the mining town of Soledar.

FRANCE PENSIONS - The French government will present its controversial pension reform this afternoon. The retirement age should be increased from 62 to 65 years. The proposal has led to widespread protests and strikes.

BELGIUM NUCLEAR - Belgium has agreed a deal with French energy firm Engie on extending the life of two nuclear reactors for a decade, the two sides said on Monday. Brussels in March had announced it was delaying its long-planned exit from nuclear energy in 2025 for 10 years as Russia’s war on Ukraine sent power prices soaring. The accord with Engie comes after months of fierce negotiation with the Belgian authorities over key questions such as how to set up the joint venture running the reactors and capping costs for the disposing of nuclear waste.

CHILD MORTALITY - In 2021, around 5 million children under the age of 5 died. A child or young person died almost every 5 seconds. And 1.9 million babies were stillborn during the same period. This is according to a new report by the United Nations. Many of these deaths could have been prevented with access and high-quality maternal health care, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

CALIFORNIA FLOODS - The star-studded California town that is home to celebrities such as Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, Oprah Winfrey and Jennifer Aniston has been ordered to evacuate, with firefighters warning that mudslides could engulf luxury homes. Montecito is expected to get up to 20 centimeters of rain in 24 hours -- on hillsides already sodden by weeks of downpours. At least 12 people have died in floods in California, floods that were triggered by storms and massive rains. Over 100,00 households have no electricity. In the last 2 days it has rained more in California than in the whole winter usually.

KRIEPS VOGUE - Vicky Krieps has been named as one of the current 30 most extraordinary actresses and actors in British Vogue – in particular because of her role as Empress Sisi in the movie Corsage. The Luxembourgish actress was also photographed for the February edition of the magazine.

HARRY BOOK - After months of anticipation and a sustained publicity blitz, Prince Harry’s autobiography “Spare” has gone on sale in the UK today. Some UK stores opened late for the midnight release of the biggest royal book since Diana: Her True Story” in 1992. The publication has been accompanied by four television interviews in the UK and the US. The book contains a claim from Harry that his brother William physically attacked him as they argued about Meghan. It also gives an account of how he lost his virginity, an admission of teenage drug use and a claim he killed 25 people while serving in Afghanistan with the British military.

BALE RETIREMENT - Gareth Bale announced his retirement from club and international football at the age of 33 on Monday, bringing to an end one of the most decorated careers in British football history. Bale, who made a record 111 appearances for Wales, led his country from the international football wilderness to two European Championships -- reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016 -- and a first World Cup since 1958.

LLORIS RETIREMENT - France captain Hugo Lloris has also announced his retirement from international football at the age of 36, three weeks after his country lost the World Cup final on penalties to Argentina in Doha.

RONALDO PAY - Meanwhile, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will earn 200 million euros to promote Saudi Arabia’s joint 2030 World Cup bid in addition to his club salary at AlNassr. This will bring his reported earnings in the country to over 400 million euros.
