Swiss President Guy Parmelin declared a National Day of Mourning on Friday, following a memorial service held for the victims of the fire on Sunday.

Firefighters stood at the front of the mourning procession.

Swiss cantonal police announced in a press release on Sunday evening that all victims of the fire had now been identified.

According to police, of the 40 fatalities, 21 held Swiss citizenship, nine were French nationals (including one with dual Swiss-French citizenship), and one held triple French, Israeli, and British citizenship. Six victims were Italian, including one with dual Italian-Emirati nationality. In addition, one victim each held Belgian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Turkish citizenship.

The victims were aged between 14 and 39, with 20 of them being minors.

A total of 35 severely injured victims were transferred to hospitals in neighbouring countries, with the Luxembourg Air Rescue also involved in these operations.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the canton of Valais has opened criminal proceedings against the two owners of the “Le Constellation” bar, on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, involuntary bodily harm, and involuntary arson. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

However, international media outlets, including the German weekly Der Spiegel, report that authorities may have inspected the establishment less frequently than initially stated.
