The ducal city was one of the first to introduce the mandatory masks, a decision that remains rather poorly understood among the population. A decree states a mask must be worn every day between 11 am and 2 am, and applies to anyone aged over 11.

Lionel Adam, the deputy mayor of Nancy and responsible for the city’s security, explains that their decision was based on the disregarding of the social distancing advice given by the French government. He states that while it is not the most popular order, the introduction of mandatory masks was absolutely necessary.

Neither Metz nor Thionville have implemented such radical measures, even if certain spaces and circumstances require the wearing of a mask (gatherings, closed spaces, markets, etc.)

135 Euros for breaching the decree

Our colleagues at 5minutes followed the municipal police of Nancy in charge of reinforcing the Covid-19 measures. They explain that this is everything but a simple task, as many people, especially foreigners, are not aware of the rules.
Police officers try to be as constructive as possible, explains Lionel Adam. It is quite difficult to identify the unaware and separate them from the others, especially on Place Stanislas. It is almost a form of provocation to see unmasked visitors in the well-known tourist spot.

An extension of the perimeter?

The decree which was implemented on 8 August 2020 is about to expire. An extension in terms of duration is expected, but talks of a territorial extension are already taking place.
