A large, golden statue of former US President Donald Trump has become the centre of attention in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The striking 2.6m sculpture, created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, depicts a naked Trump sitting atop the shoulders of a man struggling under his weight. The figure of Trump clutches a set of scales in one hand and a golf club in the other.

The artwork, named Orange Plague, has previously been displayed at the world climate conference in Brazil and at the Munich Security Conference.

The installation will remain on view in Strasbourg for only a few weeks. According to the artist, it is scheduled to be exhibited again at this November's world climate conference in Turkey.

The presence of the statue has quickly become a talking point among parliamentarians and staff in Strasbourg. Small 3D-printed replicas, provided by Galschiøt, have reportedly become sought-after keepsakes.

Many observers have described the sculpture as a fitting metaphor for the complex relationship between the European Union and the United States.
