MOROCCO QUAKE - Rescuers are facing a growing race against time to dig any survivors from the rubble of devastated villages in Morocco’s Atlas mountains, three days after the country’s strongest-ever earthquake. The 6.8-magnitude quake that struck late on Friday has claimed more than 2,100 lives and injured over 2,400, many seriously, according to official figures updated late on Sunday. Although many countries have offered help, the Moroccan authorities want to accept support from only 4 countries so far - Spain, Britain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia is also sending aid, via an airlift.

HEADS OF STATE MEETING - The heads of state of 6 German-speaking countries will meet in Brussels today. Grand Duke Henri, German President Steinmeier, the Belgian king, and the heads of state of Liechtenstein, Austria and Switzerland will informally discuss European space policy. The heads of state will also visit the headquarters of Kabelwerk Eupen, one of Europe’s leading cable manufacturing companies.

CHILE COUP - Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn is in Chile today to take part in the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the military coup. On the 11th of September 1973, Augusto Pinochet staged a coup, and the democratically elected government led by Salvador Allende was overthrown. Pinochet’s regime lasted until 1990 and tens of thousands of people died or disappeared during those years.

9/11 ANNIVERSARY - Twenty-two years after the September 11 attacks on the United States, the remains of two people who died in the collapse of the World Trade Center have been identified through DNA analysis. The identities of the two, a man and a woman, are being withheld at the request of their families. They bring to 1,649 the number of victims whose remains have been identified, of the total 2,753 who died when an Al-Qaeda commando crashed two hijacked civilian airliners into New York’s twin towers

KRIEPS AWARD - The Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps was awarded the “Tribute Award” yesterday evening for her excellent acting performance at the international film festival in Toronto. The head of the Toronto festival Cameron Bailey honored Vicky Krieps with the words that her passion for the acting craft and her ability to play very diverse authentic roles will make her a true cinema great.

SCHUEBERFOUER ENDS - After 3 weeks it’s over. Today is the last day of the Schueberfouer. Today is once again a family day with reduced prices in the afternoon, and fireworks at 10pm this evening. The Schumann roundabout already closes at 8am this morning and even the tram will not run around the fair during the fireworks display.

RUBIALES RESIGNS - The Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales has announced his resignation, weeks after he kissed one of the players in the Women’s World Cup on the lips. Spain’s star player Jenny Hermoso said she did not consent to the kiss after and has filed a legal complaint against Rubiales. He claims it was consensual.

TENNIS DJOKOVIC - Novak Djokovic has made history by winning his fourth US Open and record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title with a straight sets victory against Daniil Medvedev. The 36-year-old Djokovic won 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to become the oldest men’s champion in New York in the Open era and match Margaret Court’s all-time mark for most Grand Slam victories. Djokovic returns to world number one today for a record-extending 390th week, replacing Alcaraz at the top.

FOOTBALL - Luxembourg plays Portugal tonight in the UEFA European qualifiers. The Luxembourgish team has arrived in Faro, but without the suspended Kiki Martins and injured Mathias Olesen, two important midfielders. On the Portuguese side, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be playing tonight. The game kicks of at quarter to nine.
