According to Darmstadt police reports, a mother saw her 5-year-old son in trouble and tried to save him. A nearby witness, seeing the woman struggle, managed to pull her out of the water. However, she immediately jumped back in to try to find her son.
The family’s 13-year-old daughter also tried to save her brother. While she was unable to do so, she survived the incident and first aiders were able to bring her to safety.
An hour later both bodies were retrieved from the water. Resuscitation efforts were applied to both mother and child, to no avail.
