
TRAVEL WARNING - In view of the high tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Israel, Lebanon and Iran, and the risk of military escalation, the Luxembourg government strongly advises its citizens not to travel to the region. Luxembourg nationals currently in the region are urged to exercise the utmost vigilance and to keep themselves regularly informed of the situation, the Luxembourg government announced in a press release on Saturday evening.
SEASONAL ALLERGIES - It seems as though hay fever is becoming an increasingly common reality for people due to elevated pollen concentrations that have increased to staggering levels over recent years. More than 20 per cent of Luxembourgish residents reportedly suffer from a pollen allergy. This number is only increasing but so are pollen concentrations in the air.
CLOTHES COLLECTION - A month-long clothing collection campaign will take place across 90 municipalities in Luxembourg from today, organised by the non-profit association Help for Disabled and Disadvantaged Children in Luxembourg. Each year, the charity coordinates the collection of clothes and shoes, as well as textiles such as towels, bed linen, belts and hats. All clothes in good condition will be redistributed for continued use.
IRAN ATTACK - Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan has told the UN Security Council that Iran’s attacks crossed every red line and that Israel reserved the right to retaliate. Iran said the strikes were an act of self-defence after an attack on its Syrian consulate. World leaders have called for calm with the US warning that it will not take part in any Israeli response.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged restraint, telling the emergency meeting that “neither the region nor the world can afford more war.” Guterres also repeated his condemnation of Iran’s strikes on Israel, and the attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus. “It’s time to step back from the brink,” Guterres said.
TRUMP TRIAL - Donald Trump will become the first former US President to stand trial in a criminal case, when he steps into court in New York later today. Trump is accused of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment made to the former adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. The former president has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces 4 years in jail.
AUSTRALIA STABBING - Australian police, investigating the fatal stabbing of 6 people at a shopping centre in Sydney, say they are looking into whether the attack deliberately targeted women. Five of the victims that Joel Cauchi killed on Saturday were female, as were most of those wounded.
GOLF - Scottie Scheffler has won the Masters for a second time. The 27-year-old American finished, taking a four-stroke victory at Augusta National.
FOOTBALL – Bayer Leverkusen shattered Bayern Munich’s decade-long dominance by clinching their first Bundesliga title in a resounding 5-0 win against Werder Bremen.
In national football, Differdange remains firmly on the way to becoming champion, after beating Schifflange 4-0 yesterday.
And in the English Premier League, Manchester City hold the destiny of the Premier League title in their hands after Arsenal and Liverpool stumbled to shock defeats on Sunday. Arsenal’s unbeaten league run in 2024 was ended by Aston Villa’s 2-0 win, while Liverpool were stunned 1-0 at home by Crystal Palace. City,by contrast, cruised to a 5-1 win over Luton on Saturday to go two points clear with six games remaining.
