
CAR ACCIDENT - Three people have died following a fatal crash on Rue de Neudorf in the capital yesterday. A vehicle had attempted to overtake a bus which had pulled over at a bus stop, when a second car behind them did the same, colliding with the first. The impact of the collision left a 64-year-old man and 31-year-old woman in the rear car with fatal injuries, while a 40-year-old female pedestrian also died at the scene. The prosecutor’s office sent a crash investigation team to the scene and seized both vehicles. They are calling for witnesses.
FUEL PRICES - Fuel prices have increased again today. 95 unleaded petrol will rise by 1.5 cents to €1.57 per litre, while diesel will go up by 2.1 cents to €1.59 per litre from Tuesday.Heating oil prices are also set to go up.
DEFENCE CLOUD - Luxembourg is constructing a Cyber Defence Cloud to be used both by Luxembourg itself and other NATO countries. The whole project will run for over 12 years and has a budget of €250 million. The cloud is expected to be ready for use in two years’ time. Defence minister François Bausch said that in the light of increasing risk of cyber-attacks, it is important to secure Luxembourg’s critical infrastructure.
DUPONT LAYOFFS - DuPont Teijin Films, a major producer of polyester films, is closing two production sites in Contern, affecting 160 of the 270 workplaces in Luxembourg. The company explained the production site was no longer profitable. It argued that the main supplier of raw materials had fallen away and no alternative solution could be found.
FRANCE STRIKES - Strikes against bitterly contested plans to reform pensions in France continue today, and this time unions have upped the ante. Teachers, gas and electricity workers, train drivers, and industrial workers are all expected to join the strikes, sparking national upheaval that could last for days. Luxembourg cross-border rail traffic is set to be severely impacted for the next two days. CFL have warned that disruption is likely to last from today until around 3pm on Wednesday, with partial cancellations on the line between Rodange and Longwy. Passengers hoping to travel between Luxembourg and Thionville/Metz/Nancy/Paris and onwards will also be subjected to disruptions lasting until midnight on Wednesday. The outlook for air travel is not much better, with further strikes planned across French airports.
UKRAINE BAKHMUT - Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky says he has instructed his military country’s commanders to bolster the defence of the besieged city of Bakhmut. Russian forces have bombarded it for months and now surround the city on three sides.
EUROVISION TICKETS - Tickets for Eurovision will go on sale today. There are nine shows fans can attend in a week of the competition in Liverpool in May, including technical rehearsals. Prices start at just over 30 euros and rise to 428 euros for the live final. It is the first time the event has been held in the UK for 25 years.
PREMATURE BABIES - A Canadian girl and boy born over four months premature and not expected to survive have celebrated their first birthday with a Guinness World Records nod as the world’s most premature twins. Adiah and Adrial Nadarajah were born on March 4, 2022 at the gestational age of 22 weeks, or 126 days early -- breaking by one day the previous record set in 2018 by American twins. Weighing just 330 grams and 420 grams , respectively, they are also the lightest twins at birth ever.
FOOTBALL - Today is the start of the return matches in the round of 16 in the Champions League. Benfica Lisbon has a 2-0 home advantage against Bruges tonight and Dortmund is playing against Chelsea, after a 1-0 victory for the German club 3 weeks ago.
PARIS-NICE RACE - In cycling: Former world champion Mads Pedersen has won the sprint for the finish line at Fontainebleau to take stage two of the Paris-Nice and claim the overall lead in the eight-day cycling race. The ‘Race to the Sun’ dashes from Paris down the Rhone valley to the French Riviera and is seen as a mini Tour de France. Today on the third day, there is a team time trial over 32km around Dampierre-en-Burly, near Orléans.
It’s still wintery out there. Much like Monday, today is set to be cold and grey, with sleet forecast across the country. Higher areas may see the odd snowflake this morning, turning to rain in the afternoon, with fairly brisk winds persisting throughout the day. Morning temperatures start off between -2 and 0°C, before rising to highs of 3-5°C in the afternoon.
