
An area around the Cinemaxx cinema in Trier was cordoned off on Friday afternoon following a serious incident involving gunfire.
It is understood that at around 4.15pm, passers-by alerted police to a man walking through the pedestrian zone in Trier city centre carrying a knife and attempting to engage members of the public.
According to the latest reports from lokalo.de, the knife-wielding suspect was shot and injured by a police officer on Moselstrasse. At this stage, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The Treveris Passage was closed, with all bus services brought to a standstill and access to the pedestrian zone blocked.
At around 5.20pm, officers issued an official statement confirming that shots had been fired by police.
Authorities later stated that there is no longer any danger to the public.
