
JEWISH COMMUNITY - Luxembourg’s Jewish community has expressed its fears following the recent uptick in hate crime targeting Jews and synagogues across Europe. David Weis, president of the liberal Jewish community, said that usually there are around 40 people in attendance at religious services in Luxembourg. But on Saturday, the Esch-sur-Alzette synagogue counted just ten worshippers. He said that people are scared and the rabbi at the synagogue has demanded a police presence outside of his synagogue, at least during services.
PALESTINE PROTEST - The Muslim community Shoura organised a demonstration in the capital on Saturday in support for the people of Palestine. A few hundred people joined the march, which began in the Kirchberg area and concluded at the Place Clairefontaine.
DOOMSCROLLING DANGER - RTL talked about doomscrolling with André Melzer from the University of Luxembourg. Every day we read news about the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Israel, environmental disasters, accidents, epidemics, murder, and poverty. According to Melzer, consuming bad news is not a problem in itself. It is however important to reflect on your own behaviour and take a step back. You should actively think about why you keep doing a certain thing and think about how it makes you feel.
ISRAEL- HAMAS WAR - Heavy fighting has continued in Gaza overnight. The Palestinian Red Crescent says Israel has told them to evacuate a key hospital in Gaza City. Around 14,000 people are understood to be sheltering in the hospital grounds and doctors have said it is impossible to move patients in intensive care units and babies in incubators.
After weeks of airstrikes, Israel has declared a new “stage” in a war that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned would be “long and difficult”. Another 33 trucks with aid, including drinking water, food and medical supplies, arrived in the Gaza Strip last night. It is the largest convoy in the last 10 days that was allowed to pass through the Rafah border crossing from Egypt. But, it is still very far from the usual amount of aid coming into Gaza, at around 500 trucks a day, which were allowed to pass in normal times.
The UN security council will hold an emergency meeting later today, at the request of the United Arab Emirates to discuss the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and calling for an immediate ceasefire.
DAGESTAN MOB - A mob looking for Israelis and Jews overran an airport in Russia’s Caucasus republic of Dagestan yesterday, after rumours spread that a flight was arriving from Israel. The violence in the mostly Muslim region, which comes as war rages between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, prompted Israel to call on Russia to protect its citizens, while the United States condemned the “antisemitic protests”.PERRY POST-MORTEM - According to US media, Matthew Perry’s initial post-mortem results are inconclusive and the cause of death has been deferred. Further investigations have been requested including a toxicology report. Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the American sitcom ‘Friends’ was found unconscious in a hot tub at his house on Saturday and first responders were unable to revive him. Perry was 54.FORMULA 1 - The new Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has also won the Grand Prix of Mexico. Starting from third on the grid, the Red Bull driver stole the lead at the start and then dominated the race. The 26-year-old Dutchman came home 13.87 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who started sixth, with pole-sitter Charles Leclerc taking third place.
FOOTBALL - In the Bundesliga, Leverkusen remains first in the table, after winning against Freiburg 2-1. Frankfurt and Dortmund drew 3-3.
In England, Manchester City beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League.
And in Italy, Napoli drew 2-2 with AC Milan.
The top match in France, Sunday’s Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Lyon was postponed after the visitors’ bus was stoned on its way to the ground. The coach Fabio Grosso was injured.
RUGBY - South Africa, with iconic captain Siya Kolisi to the fore, beat New Zealand 12-11 in a gripping final for a record fourth title on Saturday. The All Blacks reduced to 14 men on 29 minutes after the sending off of skipper Sam Cane for a high tackle. It was the third successive knock-out victory for the Springboks by a single point: they edged hosts France 29-28 in a thrilling quarter-final and England 16-15 in the semis.
