
FLOOD SITUATION – The flood situation in the country is under control despite the wet weather in the last few days. Yesterday evening, there was still a flood alert in place for the south of the country, but morning hours showed a receding of water levels. The Moselle is still a good metre above normal height, but again water levels are gradually going down, with the trend expected to persist. The road between Schengen and the French border remains closed.
RESISTANCE COMMEMORATION – The Luxembourgish resistance fighters in the Second World War, as well as the victims of the many other wars that are currently underway, were remembered on Resistance Day on Sunday. It has been exactly 80 years since 23 Luxembourg resistance fighters were shot in the former concentration camp Hinzert, not far from Trier. Prime Minister Luc Frieden, present at the memorial ceremony at the Notre-Dame Cemetery in the city yesterday, said they gave their lives for the independence of the country and for their freedom.
ESCH CARNIVAL – The streets of Esch-sur-Alzette were alive with joy yesterday, as around 30,000 visitors took part in the Carnival Cavalcade. More than 60 associations from Luxembourg and neighbouring countries joined the carnival of chariots, music, and marching bands.
31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed during the invasion.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR – Israel’s military have presented the war cabinet with a plan to evacuate civilians from Rafah, in southern Gaza. Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to launch a ground offensive in the city, which is sheltering well over a million displaced Palestinians, whatever happens in hostage negotiations.MAN SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE – A serving member of the US air force is in a critical condition, after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington. US media are reporting he was protesting against the war in Gaza.
FRANCE AVALANCHE – Four people have been killed in an avalanche in the mountainous Auverge region of central France. Three other people were injured. According to the local newspaper, the avalanche hit ski mountaineers from a nearby club who had gone on an off-piste route with a guide.
FOOTBALL – Jurgen Klopp has hailed Liverpool’s League Cup final triumph against Chelsea as the “most special” trophy of his career. Virgil van Dijk clinched Liverpool’s 1-0 win with a dramatic header two minutes from the end of extra-time at Wembley last night. Liverpool’s victory was especially sweet for Klopp as it came during an injury-hit period for his club that forced him to field a remarkably inexperienced team.
In France, Goncalo Ramos converted a penalty with the last kick of the game to give Ligue 1 leaders Paris-Saint Germain a 1-1 home draw against Rennes on Sunday. Brest are second, trailing 11 points, after beating Strasbourg 3-0 on Saturday. Monaco jumped to third, two points further behind, on Sunday when Japan striker Takumi Minamino scored in the second minute of added time to give them a last-gasp 3-2 win at Lens.
RUGBY – In the Six Nations matches at the weekend, Ireland moved one step closer to back-to-back Grand Slams by beating Wales, Scotland proved too hot for England to handle and Italy held 14-man France to a dramatic draw. Ireland have largely dominated their opponents so far – three bonus-point wins over France (38-17), Italy (36-0) and Wales (31-7). This augurs well for Twickenham as England bid to bounce back and end Ireland’s hopes of making Six Nations history.
We’re going to start this brand new week the same way we’ve left the old one behind: with a portion of good ol’ Luxembourgish showers. The morning hours will be wetter than the rest of the day, but rain is forecast all day and well into the night.Expect wind speeds to range from 10–20km/h, coming from the east. Temperatures are forecast to be 5–6°C in the morning, but climbing to 8–10°C during the day.
