
POVERTY EXPLOSION - According to the charity for the homeless Stëmm vun der Strooss (Voice of the Street), poverty in Luxembourg is exploding. 11,200 people in Luxembourg relied on services provided by the charity last year, which provides help to people in need with meals, social services, medical assistance and also helps with reintegration.
BETTEL LAOS - The delegation around the Minister of Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel has arrived in Laos. The country has been a cooperation country since 1997 and is financially supported by Luxembourg. Mainly in the fight against poverty. Luxembourg is supporting projects in the health sector, in education and in rural development.
KIRCHBERG ASSAULT - According to the police, a woman was lightly injured with a cutter and had her handbag stolen on Boulevard John F Kennedy in Kirchberg. The police have not succeeded in finding the suspect. An investigation is underway.
FUEL PRICE - Prices for diesel and heating oil have dropped by around 3 cents per litre from midnight. Diesel now costs €1.531/litre. As for heating oil, low sulphur heating oil (50ppm) has dropped to €0.993/litre, down by 3.9 cents, while 10ppm oil costs €1.001/litre, or 3.2 cents less.
CHARLES CANCER - Britain’s King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and has begun treatment, just a week after he was discharged from hospital for prostate surgery. The type of cancer has not been revealed. But the palace said that during his recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement “a separate issue of concern was noted”. The statement from Buckingham Palace says the King remains positive and “looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
EU SANCTIONS - The European Union is planning further sanctions against Russia. According to information from the German news agency DPA, the list of people and structures whose assets will be frozen will grow. Over 200 individuals and companies could be affected by these measures. The EU is keen to put a 13th package of measures together to mark the second anniversary of the war on February 24.
FARMERS PROTESTS - Hundreds of farmers staged protests in various parts of the Netherlands yesterday, blocking off highways and setting fires. The protests are the latest in a wave of demonstrations across Europe by farmers demanding lower fuel taxes, better prices for products and an easing of EU environmental regulations.
LUFTHANSA STRIKE - One of Lufthansa’s main unions has called for a strike on Wednesday by the airline’s ground staff as part of a pay dispute affecting 25,000 employees. Germany’s largest airport, Frankfurt, will be affected, as will Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf.
TRAFFIC GERMANY - There were significantly more traffic jams and gridlocks on German motorways in 2023 than in the previous year, according to a report by the motorists’ association, the ADAC. The duration of delays on the motorways totalled 427,000 hours last year, that’s a quarter more than in 2022. The most congested days of the week were Wednesday and Thursday. As in previous years, there was the least congestion on Mondays and at weekends.

DOWNHILL SKIING - Italy’s 2018 Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia has injured her right leg in training. While Italian press reported Goggia suffered a double leg fracture and her season is over, the Italian Winter Sports Federation said “no diagnosis has yet been made by the medical commission”. “Turbo Goggia” also won the downhill Olympic silver in 2022 and is the reigning World Cup champion and leader in the discipline this season.
