Xavier Bettel, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, is on a work trip to Laos. The first afternoon was filled with a slightly more touristic cultural programme.

RTL journalist Céline Spithoven joined the entourage and shared a little insight into Bettel's day in Laos.

Following a 21-hour travel journey, the delegation arrived in the city of Luang Prapang. The first afternoon was programmed lightly, with a number of temples on the agenda.

The famous sunset on Mount Phousi was not to be missed. Every evening, tourists climb the 355 steps to enjoy a 360-degree view of Luang Prapang at the top and see the sun drop behind the mountains, painting a red sky.

If you take the 328 steps down on the other side, you will find yourself at the well-known night market. Here, the roads are closed between 5-10pm to make way to hundreds of market stalls.

In true Bettel fashion, the former Prime Minister tried on one or two scarves. The stalls mostly sell self-made handicrafts, but also combs made of ivory, bracelets made of bomb remnants from the Vietnam War and traditional clothing.

On Tuesday, the delegation, which also includes politicians Sven Clement and Gusty Graas, will visit Vang Vieng, a small town in the province of Vientiane.
