
JUNCKER WARNING – In an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, Luxembourg’s former prime minister and former EU Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker has emphasised the importance of approaching US President Donald Trump with respect and seriousness. He also stressed that now is the time for the EU Commission to act, saying that Europe can only be strong if it stands united against the US President and reacts.
FUEL PRICES – Fuel prices have dropped today. 95 petrol has gone down 1.6 cents per litre, now costing €1.54. Diesel is cheaper by 2.4 cents per litre, now costing €1.50. Heating oil has also gone down in price.
VICKY KRIEPS – Luxembourg star Vicky Krieps, together with German director Florian Gallenberger, have been appointed presidents to the prestigious German Film Academy. Krieps’ latest film titled Hot Milk recently celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale.
ATM ROBBERIES – Luxembourg has recorded 15 ATM robberies since 2020, with three incidents already this year, sparking parliamentary questions on security and law enforcement efforts. A total of 12 perpetrators have been identified since 2020 with Luxembourg’s police working closely with neighbouring countries, and international authorities, such as Europol, in monitoring these crimes.
PUPPY ESCAPE – A puppy had a lucky escape after falling into a narrow gap between a wall and the ramp of a car park lift in Rodange at the weekend. Hailed as a successful rescue operation, the puppy was lifted to safety by Petange Fire Brigade and reunited with its owner and was thankfully unharmed.
POLICE – The police have confirmed reports of a burglary involving a small cash van in Leudelange on Monday, prompting a major search operation. Shortly before 2pm, the police were called to the crime scene in Leudelange following reports of a robbery. Eyewitnesses described an assault on a small van responsible for changing cassettes in ATMs.
EUROPE SUMMIT – French President Emmanuel Macron has briefed the US and Ukrainian presidents following Monday’s European summit. The meeting was prompted by America’s decision to hold direct talks with Russia about Ukraine, excluding Europe and Kyiv. Zelensky said after the call that he and Macron had agreed that any security guarantees for Ukraine must be robust and reliable.
US RUSSIA TALKS – The American Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to meet senior Russian officials in Saudi Arabia today. The US said the conversation would determine whether Russia was serious about peace talks.
PLANE CRASH – A Delta Air Lines plane with 80 people on board has crash-landed at Toronto’s main airport in Canada, flipping upside down and leaving at least 18 people injured but causing no deaths. No explanation of the cause of the accident, or how the plane ended up flipped with its wings clipped, has been provided.
FRANCE TRIAL – A French surgeon is to stand trial over raping or sexually assaulting almost 300 patients, mostly children amid systemic failures that allowed his abuse to continue. Joel Le Scouarnec is already in jail, after a court found him guilty of abusing four children, including two of his nieces. According to AFP, he practised for decades right up until his retirement despite a conviction for owning abusive images of children and colleagues sounding the alarm.
FOOTBALL – Several Champions League games are taking place tonight: Milan are playing Feyenoord, Benfica play Monaco, Atalanta against Club Brugge, and Bayern are playing Celtic. Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said he believes Harry Kane will be fit to face Celtic tonight, after the striker missed training ahead of the game. German media reported Kane picked up a knock in Saturday’s hard-fought 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
CYCLING – Italian rider Jonathan Milan prevailed in a chaotic scramble for the line to claim first stage honours in the UAE Tour. Tour de France champion and hot favourite Tadej Pogacar launched the sprint 350 metres from the finish only to run out of steam close to home. He had to settle for 10th place. The race concludes on Sunday.
CRICKET – Pakistan will host a first major cricket tournament in almost three decades starting tomorrow, just a few years after the country was off-limits because of security fears. The build-up has not been without problems after India refused to play in Pakistan and will instead play their matches in Dubai. The country has stepped up security, especially in host cities Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, even if attacks in major cities are increasingly rare.
ICE HOCKEY – Canada has set up another politically charged ice hockey match against the United States by beating Finland 5-3 to reach the final of the NHL Four Nations tournament on Thursday. Saturday’s first meeting between Canada and the US descended into mayhem within seconds of the puck being dropped, with three fistfights breaking out in the first nine seconds.
This week promises to be very chilly, and today is no exception! Although the day will be mostly sunny with only a few clouds, it will start off quite cold, with temperatures dropping as low as -8°C in some northern parts of the country.
The morning will see temperatures ranging from -6°C to -3°C, rising to a daytime high of 4°C in the south and 3°C in the north.
