Video - near-transparent watersJellyfish filmed gliding through clear Venice canals

A few weeks ago, it would still have been unthinkable to spot jellyfish and other aquatic life in the canals of one Europe's tourism hotspots.

Biologist Andrew Mangoni captured the video of the large jellyfish peacefully gliding through a canal near St Mark’s Square in picture-perfect Venice. The area is usually bustling with tourists but currently eerily empty due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

The biologist told CNN that he a “combination of low tide and low traffic has led to the deposition of sediments on the bottom of the canals which has led to an increased transparency of the water in the canals of Venice.”

This does not necessarily mean that the city’s waterways are less polluted but officials have stated that air pollution has decreased.
